Emily-Jayne/Emilie-Jayne - opinions please!

Just that - after much discussion I think we've settled on Emily-Jayne or Emilie-Jayne for Dd2 (unsure on which spelling!?) Just wanted to gather opinions as a friend told me today she considered Emily very "prim" and a bit "weak" sounding - she had no idea that it was our chosen name but am now starting to doubt myself Hmm All opinions/suggestions welcome!

Emily/Emilie is a lovely name (it's actually one of my top choices if we have a girl!)

I personally prefer the Emilie spelling as i think it's more unusal. There'll prob be lots of people saying that they'll be spelling it for others all their life etc but i have that with a fairly normal name anyway (Victoria/Vicki) so i wouldn't worry about that!

Emily is a lovely classic name and popular for good reason. I'd spell it Emily, as I think you'd be forever correcting people otherwise.

I would lose the hyphen though and have Emily Jayne.

I think it's a lovely name. I really like Jane/Jayne and think it's due a revival :) I'd spell it Emily Jane with no hyphen personally. The hyphen looks a bit ugly to me. Emily-Jayne has too many 'y's in it and Emilie will just need spelling all the time. Emilie without the Jane/Jayne is nice though.

I would also Spell it Emily Jane. No hyphen and please no y in Jane. Wayne, Shayne, Jayne just NO.

Emily is a very popular name (because it is lovely) so there is a good likelihood there will be others in her class with the same name. You could however choose something you think is an original twist eg Amelie, (I've always assumed this is a french version) and find there are more than one of them too. My DDs class has no Emilys but two Amelies.

I would definitely lose the hyphen and go for Emily (with Jane as middle name) - biased as that's my daughter's name :)

Emily Jayne is nice. I think Jayne is enough of an accepted spelling to not be lumped in with the Shaynes.

Yes I don't think Jayne is Wayne-like at all, it's as old a spelling as Jane is, but Jane looks nicer IMO.

As an owner of a hyphen myself and two dds with hyphens I fully support hyphen usage. Massively hated on here but raspberries to all of those.

I'm often known by various forms. First, initials, full name. I weed out and rank people by what they use. I've changed my own preferences at different ages as well. It's fabulous for fitting around you at all points of your life. If its not hyphened then she will always be Emily. Hyphen-ing means she gets to choose how's he uses her name rather than others for her, people are lazy and go for short of everything.

Personally if you go 'fancy' spelling for Emilie then go plain for Jane. Looks a bit neater. And Emily (can carry) Jayne.

Hope she loves her hyphen as much as me x

Thanks for all the feedback, it's really interesting how names create such varied opinions from people.
The hyphen and Jayne with a "y" is a family name but I hadn't considered maybe a bit "y" heavy with Emily or a bit confusing to spell with Emilie. Lots to think about.
Thanks again for all opinions - if nothing else it's made me absolutely certain I'll be going with Emily in one form or another! Smile

Another one for Emily Jane (these flow realky well together) and no ie's, y's or hyphens. I fully see where the previous owner if a hyphen is coming from as I also have one, but would disagree and say don't. I also think hyphens have been made even more' downmarket' recently with all the Lily-Mai's and Ellie-May's etc.

It's a lovely classic name, not weak sounding at all IMO. It was my mum's choice for my brother 40 years ago had he been a girl!

I'm another one in the 'Emily Jane, lose the hyphen' camp.

I like the spelling of emilie but oddly not with Jayne so I would on this case say Emily-Jayne

Emily Jane is my name! I'm in my 30's. my mum was obviously ahead of her time. It's a great name although I don't know anyone my age with this name, there seems to be loads age 6 and under. In fact I met another Emily Jane last week, but she was 3. I sometimes get called milly or emmie.

Please don't ruin two very beautiful, classy and classical names with redundant hyphens and extra letters. They are wonderful as they are.

Emily is fine. Jane, not Jayne, as otherwise it is a lifetime of spelling it out.

Emily is a beautiful name, as is Jane. But the only nice way to use them is to go with Emily Jane. I'm not keen on the y and the hyphen really 'cheapens' (sorry, can't think of another word for it!) the names.

My middle name is plain old Emma-Jane. I think it sounds lovely with Emily slightly jealous . Although I sometimes forget and spell it Jayne. Blush Confused
