Brought to your by the letter C...Cassia, Cecily and Corin?

Evening all, my husband and I are working through a (fairly terrible) baby name book at the mo and did the Cs in a long car journey today...can you please let me have you first thoughts on the three above?

Cassia I'n not really sure about, but my husband and I agree on so few girl's names that I have to grasp anything I can with both hands at the moment!

I've always liked Cecile, but am starting to think Cecily is better with our surname. Is it a bit prissy, though?

I'd always thought Corin was unisex but thinking about it, I can only think of Corin Redgrave and a boy called Corin from my home village. I still really like it for a girl, though.

I really like Corin.

Not fussed on either of the others.

How would you pronounce Corine or Corinne? (if you saw them cold, as it were) I LOVE the Bob Dylan song Corrina, Corrina - he pronounces it somewhere between Coreena and Corinnna.

If you saw a Corin written down, would you assume it to be a boy or a girl, or equally likely to be either?

Love Cecily, prissiness could be overcome by calling her Cece. Corin is lovely, I prefer this spelling and pronunciation over Corinne.

How about Calista? Pronounced with the emphasis on the 'Ca' (to rhyme with Alistair) rather than the 'Liss' as in Flockheart iyswim?

Cassia and Cassie, and Cecily are all nice. Cecily is so pretty. It was on our list for a girl, and liked Cece as a nn. The only thing is I think it means 'blind'. Ceceila does, and the names are obviously related. It this doesn't put you off use it, as it it a lovely name.

I adore Cassia. Also like Cecily, but not as much.

Jojo I thought it was only a boy's name but I googled and it looks as though it's used for both, with that spelling. I do worry that most people would assume Corin was a boy, though. To be fair, we don't know what we're having, so we could still use it for a boy, it's just that we thought we had a boy's name sorted, and this throws us into disarray! The "blind" meaning doesn't worry me as I have a friend called Cecile who's so funny and sweet that she erases any negative connotations for me.

Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney is a marvellous woman, so I would think it's a lovely girl's name.

I agree with that, I used to know a Corinne and that is how her name was said.

I also used to know a Corinna. This is a classical name and is pronounced Co-RINN-ah (not Co-REE-nah which is spelled either Corina or Corrina).

I like Cassia best. A related name is Keziah (both mean acacia tree). Cassia could have the lovely nn Cass, or Cassie..

I prefer Cicely to Cecily but I don't know why.

I know a Corin who is a girl but tbh I saw her name written before I saw her and assumed she was a boy.

My 12yr old dd is a Cassia. She gets Cass or Cassie, and it happens to suit her well!

To those saying that Corinne is the girl's version - would you definitely pronounce that the same, and not as Co-REEN? Kitten I do like Corinna but am wondering if spelling it any way other than Corin is just going to lead to a lot of pronunciation confusion! So I guess I just need to decide whether I'd prefer gender confusion or pronunciation confusion...

mathanxiety Keziah is nice but I think a little harsher than Cassia, which I'm warming to more and more.

All I can say is that I never heard anyone pronounce it any other way than Co-RINN-ah.

With Corinne, some people will say it with the stress on the second syllable, Cuh-RINN, but I think the other way is nicer.

I don't think it's a big deal really. People will pronounce a name the way it is introduced, ie if you say "My name's CO-rinne", they're unlikely to say "Hello, Cuh-RINN". If they've seen the name written down first and get it wrong, then you correct it the first time it crops up and that's usually all it takes.

Kitten I know you're right about it not really mattering, but I am Pregnant and Unreasonable and therefore spending waaaay too much time over-thinking this, along with many other baby-related issues! You should have seen my pushchair threads...

Cecily: Beautiful, classic name

Cassia: Quite nice but I can't help thinking of blackcurrants

Corin: The name of a gene involved in the determination of hair colour... admittedly most people won't know this but it would put me off.

Cecily - i was at school with a Cecily, she is still called Sesil 10 years on which she hates as it reminds her of an old man.

Corin - for the love of god don't do it if you are going to be anywhere near Glasgow, my mum almost used it until she noticed everyone pronounced Corn in our accent :o

Corin is both - the only one I know personally is a woman.
Not keen on Cassia. How about Caroline, nn Cassie?
There's also Celia, if you think Cecile/Cecily are a bit too much.
