DH worried DD may be rather thick set and a pretty name would not suit her!!!

Right, have no idea if expecting DD or DS but we have a whole raft of boys names we like.

Girls names I like are:

Daisy
Florence
Kitty
Polly
Poppy
Claudia

DH likes Gabriella and keeps saying all my names are pretty names and if daughter is thick set like DH then a pretty name will be odd.

Surname is a colour and about the 3rd most common name in the world!

I think your daughter's name (should you have one) will fit her regardless of any of her features. Just find a name you both like.

I'd perhaps avoid descriptive names like Willow and Grace, but other than that I wouldn't worry. All your name choices sound fine to me.

WTAF is your DH thinking? Does he regularly come out with this sort of crap and will he be saying stuff like this to your DD too? Body and self-esteem issues ahoy!

I think the names on your list or lovely and would suit any girl. None of them conjure up images of fragile little fairies for me. Find one you both like and forget about the whole 'thick set' red herring.

I love all your girl names, in fact I think Gabriella is much more frilly. I also think your DH needs a smack. Children become their names, although I can see that something like Grace might become amusing if your LO is more clumsy than graceful! But there must be some, Grace is very popular now. I personally think something like Pixie is more of a risk but that's my opinion.

I know a Kitty and she is a real rufty tufty tomboy. She is brilliant. My own DD tends that way too. They are great fun!

I like the name Willow but also have a colour surname and given my stature just wouldn't risk it for DD!

But seriously although I don't like the kind of pretty names you do I think your DH is being an arse insensitive to suggest that they wouldn't suit someone "thick set."

So your DH is a bit uptight about his own body shape and is projecting this onto an unborn baby?

I think Gabrielle is the best of them all and I hate names that end with Y.

I would go for a name that could be adapted. I think a 'frilly' name would've been terrible for me as I am a tom boy but if you played safe with something - i.e Jasmine (pretty) nn Jazz if tom boy - it would be easier.
As for the heavy set thing. What a crock!

He's being realistic. If she's likely to be big, then a twee name may well not suit her. Something more dignified is called for. Claudia would be OK though.

Ok first off all the names u have picked out are lovely and would suit any girl! Every girl deserves to have a pretty name no matter what she looks like! Claudia is my personal fave off the list,its so unheard of nowadays!

Second of all,weight isn't necesscarily hereditory! Some people are more pre-disposed to being larger but that's just how they're supposed to be and diet and lifestyle will play large part in how thick or thin any child (or adult for that matter!) Is! The "fat gene" is more myth than anything else!

Thirdly, if ur dh is worried about having a "thick set" dd then-if he means it in the overweight/fat term-then surely Gabriella has got to up there with the name Pat of names not to call your child?! Gabriella would probably get shortened to Gabby and IF she does turn out to be bigger then she could get bullied and called "Flabby Gabby" or something along those lines in school and that is a horrendous insult but it would certainly attract a lot of bullies and make their life easier when it comes to name calling so ur dd will hate u both for calling her Gabriella because of it! The names on UR list are all lovely feminine names and-as a bonus if worried-none of then rhyme with weight insults! Well none of the obvious that I can think of anyway but god knows what kids call people of the larger side nowadays!

Personally I'd also have serious words with ur dh about what he said,if he's not happy with his weight then that's his issue,its got nothing to do with ur unborn child and he shouldn't think that way and allow it to affect what names u pick-except to avoid names that could be turned into insults if ur both worried about ur child turning out to b on the big side. I think children tend to be the opposite of their name, we called ds a name which means elf and he is a huge baby, he was 10 pounds at birth and he is already in some of his 9-12 month clothes (he is 3.5 months) he is much more like a giant than an elf.

The name tor was on our list, I am sure if we had opted for that he would have been little and dainty might choose tor for the next baby in the hope of having less stitches

But I had similar feelings about the name Willow and Grace. They made me wonder what kind of qualities I was projecting onto my imaginary DD - and Willow and Grace do seem like recognisably descriptive names to me - now I feel like I want to avoid any name with obvious (physical) connotations, and I'm wary of giving DD a distinctly "feminine" name, as I don't feel like I want to gender her so boldly from the very outset.

That said, I don't see what particular attributes the names you've picked out are supposed to have. They are nice names and I can't imagine who they wouldn't suit.
