What do we think of Alma?

Saw it yesterday on a website about old-fashioned names, with an Australian focus, and my DH really likes it. He also likes Flora. I like both and we also have Florence and now Olive on the list.

Any thoughts?

Thanks Pottering. Do you think it's "pretty" enough or is a bit harsh. I don't think it is one of those names that people will say "that's lovely" (like Rose for example) and I am wondering whether I am doing her a disservice by giving her a name like this. Not that I think girls need pretty names at all, but I want her to have a nice name.

Is Alma Sedgewick someone? Reminds me her whoever she is!

I know a lovely American lady called Alma, so have a nice association with the name, but I do think it's perhaps a bit harsh, plus there aren't really any associated diminutives, which for me isn't great.

Reminds me of Mike Balddwin's 80's wife from Coronation Street.

My Granny's name, the only Alma I've met in real life. My Granny is lovely but means I'd find it strange on a baby. I like it though.

One of those names that looks nice written (see other thread) but not so nice spoken. Even if it does mean 'soul' in Latin.
How about Alba?

I don't think it's harsh at all but then i know a RL 5 year old Alma. She's blonde haired, blue eyed and beautiful. Alma hasn't been in Corrie for years and it certainly won't bother the next generation one bit. It's a lovely name and, unlike a few of the suggestions, I doubt it will ever get too popular. It's not made up either so a perfect choice in my opinion!

The Corrie character left the series years ago, and though a long-running character, wasn't one of the really big iconic characters. So probably OK from that angle.

I'd think of the battle, and the station station named after it.
