Help me convince dh about Genevieve

Was going through some name ideas today at work and Genevieve got the most 'wow' response, and I realised how much I love it.

But dh isn't keen.

How can I persuade him?

Also, do you think it will inevitably get shortened? We already have a Jen and an Eve in the family so I'm trying to think of alternative abbreviations .... Any ideas?

I think it's lovely, elegant but pretty, but not fluffy. With that name you could be anything, a lawyer, a florist, it suits all.

You could shorten it to "Jen" but with a French "je" sound at the beginning, or to Viva.

ElegantSufficiency · 25/03/2013 19:24

Oh no, it's so Disney Princess. Terrible. It is a lovely name but, no, don't use it.

Bowlersarm · 25/03/2013 19:26

The Genevieve I know (she's ten) is always known as Gee. Don't know if that helps or hinders!

elQuintoConyo · 25/03/2013 19:29

Is it pronounced 'jon-vee-ev' or 'gen-eh-veev' ?? I get confused. I prefer the second...

I feel it's a bit too close to Jen and Eve - otherwise what would the shortenings be? Jen Viev Viva Jena

And would you be ok having children named: Jen, Eve and Genevieve? Would the last dd be the odd one out, to you?

How about Guinevere?

NoMoreMarbles · 25/03/2013 19:30

It's a lovely nameSmile

You could shorten it to Ginny (as in weasleyWink) as that is niceSmile or Vivi which happens to be on my short list tooSmile

If your DH doesn't like it has he given any of his own ideas to the mix?

YellowandGreenandRedandBlue · 25/03/2013 19:31

I'm sorry but I'm with your husband, it's a bit too much IMO! Nice middle name though.

5eggstremelychocaletymadeggs · 25/03/2013 19:31

We had genevieve on our list and when dd was three days old it was almost her name but i realised everyone would shorten it to jen which i dont like, so we ruled it out.

With a jen and an eve in the family already it will be tricky! But i like vivi as a nickname, trouble is you dont get to dictate nicknames and shortenings.

A friend has a daughter called this. She is called Gen or Genie. I always feel sorry for the child (and others) trying to learn to spell it! Sorry, not keen. Bit of a mouthful for me.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 25/03/2013 19:43

I have a friend whose daughter has this name. I love it but no matter how hard she tried to get everyone to call her vivi for short, everyone calls her Jen.

omletta · 25/03/2013 19:47

I love it, it's beautiful and sounds intelligent and thoughtful, but I couldn't use it as it reminds me of one of the machines they used to use (perhaps they still do) to draw the national lottery - sorry

louloutheshamed · 25/03/2013 19:49

Sorry, I don't have daughters named Jen and Eve - that would be too much- I mean in the extended (but still close) family- cousins, aunts etc

I love this name , very medieval sounding .Have known two and both are mostly called by their full name although have heard it shortened to Genvie.

Ginny Weasley is actually Ginevra which is also lovely

YellowandGreenandRedandBlue · 25/03/2013 19:53

I love the idea of Jen, eve & genevieve all sisters!!

Don't try and persuade him. Ideally you both have to be happy with the name.

TwllBach · 25/03/2013 19:57

I love it and it is on my wish list, but I don't know if I would be bbrave enough to use it Grin

I also don't really like Jenny, so would push for Ginny, definitely.

Blanketsandpillows · 25/03/2013 19:59

I love it! I only know one (in her 30's) and her name is never shortened

petitdonkey · 25/03/2013 20:02

I know a lovely Genevieve who shortens it to Gena (jen-ah)

I do agree that you have to both love the name though or, at the very least, he cannot dislike it. Does he have any preferences?

Viviennemary · 25/03/2013 20:09

I don't really like it that much I'm afraid.

Unami · 25/03/2013 20:10

I love it too. I would totally go for it, but DP insists it's "too french".

ladymia · 25/03/2013 20:11

I would not try and persuade my dh, it's important you both love the name.

There are names that I have loved and mine hated so they got struck off the list, just like there were names he loved that I didn't. Would have been pee'd off with him if he had carried on trying to convince me to use a name I didn't like.

Spiderfrommars · 25/03/2013 20:17

I love this name BUT it will get shortened...something which you will have little control over.If you can live with this I think it is a beautiful name.

elQuintoConyo · 25/03/2013 20:18

It's a pretty name but all the nicknames/shortenings are bloody awful! If you want a dd called Gena, just call her Gena or Jenna!

(Rant over)

fishybits · 25/03/2013 20:21

The only Genevieve I know never has her name shortened. She's mid thirty's. She introduces herself as Genevieve and repeats as necessary Grin

I think it's down to the individual as to whether it's shortened or not.
