And my preference for Seb has nothing to do with a beautiful Belgian man I once, ahem, knew Wink

creativevoid · 25/03/2013 15:09

We have a Luke so I am prejudiced. One of the reasons we chose it is that it doesn't really have any class connotations so works in all settings. However 3 years on I occasionally read a newspaper article about some young thug named Luke beating up an old granny (or something) and I cringe inside. I suppose that's a risk with any name though...

DreamsTurnToGoldDust · 25/03/2013 15:10

I think your dh needs to back off with his insistence of names and allow a name to come once your ds is born, it should be a name you both like. Congratulations in advance Smile

limp-wristed - describes a man who does not behave in the strong and determined way traditionally expected in men.

describes a man who seems, by his manner, to be gay.

dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/limp-wristed

It's not me that's being homophobic then, as I was using the first definition.

EduCated · 25/03/2013 15:15

The two meanings are intrinsically intertwined. I take it your implying that I'm homophobic?

KittenOfDoom · 25/03/2013 15:39

Take it how you want. I shall move on.

Bumpsadaisie · 25/03/2013 15:41

I don't think you're homophobic. Slightly obsessed though!

Limp-wristed is not a homophobic term. It can be applied to men of any and all sexual orientations.

EduCated · 25/03/2013 15:45

How on earth do I appear slightly obsessed?

Google limp wristed. All the hits I got mentioned it being a derogatory term applied to gay men. This is the only context I have ever heard it in. In RL I have only ever heard it used by people of a certain age, where to imply a man may be anything other than perfectly straight is seen as a huge insult.

I am truly surprised to see it here used to describe baby names, of all things. I thought it was a term which was thankfully falling out of usage. Sadly it seems not.

SoupDreggon · 25/03/2013 15:48

I missed the bit where you said you don't like any of them.

In this case you need to start again with a fresh list. Don't get bullied into choosing a name you don't like.

Bumpsadaisie · 25/03/2013 15:49

I have no wish to be offensive to gay people. I have actually just emailed my DD's godfather (gay), my DD's godmother (gay), my cousin (gay) and one of my best friends from college (gay) to see if they think "limp-wristed" is an appalling term of homphobic abuse only used nowadays by ignorant dinosaurs.

CPtart · 25/03/2013 16:28

I have a Luke -love it. Marcus was also on our short list. Sebastian is ok, I know a few and they all get called Seb.
I would be more worried about your husband laying down the law.....what will he be like will other issues when the child is born??

CruCru · 26/03/2013 11:54

I like Luke and Sebastian but if you don't, don't settle. It will make you very bad tempered.

Still18atheart · 26/03/2013 12:04

I love all three especially Sebastian

MamaBlue4 · 26/03/2013 13:48

My brother is called Luke, and I've always loved Sebastian, if we're having a boy we've put that on a short list :)

Jambi · 26/03/2013 13:58

Oh, I love Sebastian! Another vote from me! Grin

simplesusan · 26/03/2013 22:07

Luke.

raisah · 27/03/2013 02:24

Sebastian

MidnightMasquerader · 27/03/2013 02:34

Lucky your DH, getting his own way by virtue of refusing to compromise... Hmm

Like you, I don't actually like any of them, but if forced at gunpoint, would chose Luke and Sebaastian from his list.

TheRealFellatio · 27/03/2013 03:03

Sebastian is truly lovely. Marcus...meh. Luke is AWFUL

delilah88 · 27/03/2013 22:01

I love all these names!!!! Luke is my personal fave

dragonflymama · 27/03/2013 22:20

DH = Markus and love his name (he's German hence k sp). I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant with dc2, Sebastian nn Seb is our top boys name. Prefer Luca or Lucas to Luke. Having said that agree you need to like name too. Good luck!

willyoulistentome · 27/03/2013 22:31

I have a Marcus so a bit biased. Funnily enough my Marcus has two mates called Luke and Sebastian, (and none of them are limp wristed)

BernadetteRostenkowskiWolowitz · 27/03/2013 22:37

I love Marcus.

The other two are a bit affected/bland. Marcus good strong Roman name, go for that.

willyoulistentome · 27/03/2013 22:42
TheRealFellatio · 28/03/2013 02:51

Sorry. Grin

I am ambivalent about Marcus, but for some reason Luke is one of those names I have alwys disliked. There is something about the sound it makes that bothers me. When I hear it I can't help thinking 'Luke = Liver fluke' Confused

Plus my son had a friend called Luke and he was a PITA.
