according to the daily mirror, samantha is in the top 20

I don't know a single Samantha under 30, it's not talked about on here, so who are all these people calling their children Samantha?

OP posts:

I know four all estranged Samantha's. All around my age. One was a school friend, two ex colleagues (same workplace), and the other my exH's cousin. They are all under 30.

Maybe it's a regional thing! Definitely not in my top 20 though!

It's American!

I know a couple of Samanthas under 30. My MIL is 46 and she is a Samantha!

anonymosity · 10/03/2013 23:02

Samantha out of Bewitched
And a few slutty Samantha's at university in the late 80s / early 90s - who usually tried getting off with other people's bfs

ChocsAwayInMyGob · 10/03/2013 23:03

I know a wonderful Samantha in her early forties. It has Henrew origins and means Listener.

Many people think it's American because of Bewitched.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 10/03/2013 23:03

I have a relative called Samantha. Shes 22 ish. A pita. We dont speak.

She had two friends also called Samantha.

ChocsAwayInMyGob · 10/03/2013 23:03

Hebrew, not Henrew.

FelicityWasCold · 10/03/2013 23:04

I know about 5 all between 20-30

Interestingly none older or younger!

It sounds v. 'Of its time' to me ( that time being the 90s!)

chickydoo · 10/03/2013 23:05

One in her 40's one in her 30's

OutragedFromLeeds · 10/03/2013 23:05

I knew about 20 when I was at school so would all be aged 25-30 now.

I know 2 aged about 8-10.

No babies.

That top 20 is for America though, which explains it! I also don't any babies called Aubrey, Avery or Addison.

CelticPromise · 10/03/2013 23:05

I know one small one.

sausagebaconandtomatobutty · 10/03/2013 23:05

doh -hadn't noticed it was American!

They only Addison I know is the one from Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice, does that count?

KentuckyFriedChildren · 10/03/2013 23:08

I know at least 10 people called samantha who are early 20s plus a few more of various ages. Must've been a popular name up here in the early 90s. But yeah it makes sense that it is american Smile

WinkyWankyWonkyPeppa · 10/03/2013 23:08

Actually the etymology of Samantha is 'unknown'.

Speculation (without evidence) has suggested an origin from the masculine given name Samuel[2] and anthos, the Greek word for "flower".[3] A variant of this speculation is that it may have been a feminine form of Samuel with the addition of the already existing feminine name Anthea.[2]

Meaning of Samantha

the origin of this name is uncertain, but it is thought to be a combination of Sam and Anthea and means 'name of God'.

I also know an Addison. Aged 5

I should have said that those quotes were from Wikipedia and bounty.com respectively!

Startail · 10/03/2013 23:16

Sweet little girl I went to school with, strange to think she must be 45. No little ones.

bringbacksideburns · 10/03/2013 23:19

I was called after the girl in Bewitched. My mother had never heard of it before then. Hmm

I didn't know many growing up but now there seem to be a few around. I'm sure it became popular more in the late sixties and seventies.

I noticed Fred's grand daughter in Call The Midwife tonight was named Samantha 'a modern choice that didn't go well with some people.'
