Baby names

Luna Violet....Too far out or manageable?

Hello!
We decided tonight that we both love the name Luna. We think it is beautiful. It means moon but is also associated with magic and madness which is an idea we think is very cool ha.
Possibly will team it with Violet as a middle name as this was initially top of our girls list.
Keeping names and gender(once we find out in two weeks) a secret so can't ask for friends opinions so what do you guys think?
I myself have an unusual name (first middle and maiden name) and usually suffered from awkward spelling and mispronunciation due to this, tended to be known by a nickname til my mid teens. However this shouldn't be an issue with Luna as its pretty straightforward. Plus I now love my name and appreciate the fact I know nobody else with it, and never have!
So opinions please on Luna possibly followed by Violet. Mental or quirky?
Thanks!

Haha oh gosh Waynetta!I shall steer clear.Oh can you imagine had I gone for that?!Gabrielle is a pretty name but its too fussy with a middle name,a family surname and then the surname ha!Hopefully this child will enjoy spelling. We'd thought Violet would be good as it can be pronounced the French way too.x

I know a Luna Poppy. Has never been called loony, loon etc.
Lunette sounds like a brand of tampon though.

Ha yes lets rule Lunette out!Thinking out loud like a tit.
Luna Poppy is pretty. Pleased to know not all children/people sway to the Looney etc when its a name used in practice.x

sorry, I really don't like it.
For me it isn't just that you can make it into Lunatic, on its own it sounds like an abbreviation of Lunatic.

I love most of your boys names, (love Ezra - dh wouldn't use it!) and I like Violet.
I think there are so many great names out there, I wouldn't want this one.

Sorry, not being rude, being honest because you asked.

You could just swap them around, Violet Luna sounds better. I had forgotton about the two surnames, they do that here too but generally only use one of them day to day. On official forms is usually the only time both surnames (and middle names) are used.

Sorry, Luna Violet sounds like a nightclub to me.

I love both names individually, but not together.

I like both names but as some have already sugested not keen on them together.....but how often do you say both together anyway!

One of our weims is called Luna. If it wasnt for her it would be dd3s name if i had got it past dhGrin.

I love your boys names Dexter and Ezra best. Have you thought about Elijah? I love this name but Dd1 is Elizabeth and sometimes goes by Eliza(family only) so we cant use itSad.

Don't worry. I don't think it's rude to offer me your opinion. That's what I want! I was just saying in my previous rant, there's no need for people to be utterly vile. It's definitely a name that is marmite.
In spain they do that? excellent. Yeah I think we'll only use DHs surname on a daily basis and have the other used for official documents. That's what I chose to do when I married which I think my dad(father of two married daughters) appreciated. Switching it is a good idea if we chicken out!
Willow is very pretty. I love nature names too. Although Luna never appeared on our list initially. Oddly enough they were all older names.
I think boys names, it'll be Dexter or Ezra.
Ha a nightclub! That's hilarious!

Sorry but I just switched them round in my head violet Luna = violent loony??

You think it's nice and it is. BUT your child will NOT think its nice not at all when they hit school or when she is an adult and wants to be taken seriously.

Sorry

I love Luna, but Violet does nothing for me. It's a very... harsh sounding name.

Hahaha I love Violent Looney =) Thats marvellous! Perhaps I'm just not that bothered about things that other people find offensive. Or maybe, I am more impressed with all you guys imaginative connotations. People around here aren't that imaginative, as lovely as our area is.
I think the reason I can get over it is because I have an usual name. I have several unusal names. And whilst I went with a nickname for a few years in my teens, it was mainly due to spelling confusion and mispronunciation, I would always introduce myself as 'I'm full name but most people call me nickname'. My real name now is what everyone calls me and I hate people still using my NN. It could have been ridiculed and twisted to fit some childish joke, as most names can, but it never was. Never ever. I don't think its a non serious name though. I think it could sound quite strong depending on the character.
Thanks for the input though. They prepare us. x

Thats interesting zingally. I hadn't thought of it as being harsh sounding before. My main concern for Violet was that it would be shortened to Lettie which I really dislike. Again, something to think about.
If not Violet, what names do people suggest as a middle name instead? I think I'm sort of stuck now ha!

The point is, you might not be bothered at the idea of being named 'Looney', but your child might. Why do that to her ?
You are right, children often find things to twist and change that you might not have thought of, but you have now had this pointed out to you, so why would you want to give your daughter this name to carry around for the next 90 years, when there are hundreds of names out there that wouldn't so obviously lend themselves to such a nickname?

specialknickers · 20/02/2013 18:13

I think it might just be me, but when I see those two names together, I transpose them and misread as "violent lunatic". I am a bit knackered though and dh has just called up to say that he's not going to get home to do bedtime so maybe that's a factor...

I'm not injecting my baby with crack. That would make me a bad mother, inflicting something truly heinous on them. (Neither am I calling them Fanny which is blatantly and only ever a vagina.) A name is a name. You grow with it, you can change it should you wish. We wanted to get the general consensus from here which has actually been positive-hurrah! So we're definitely going with it. I just wanted to make sure that the possible variations aren't too unkind. And they aren't. They're light-hearted and nothing we wouldn't use at home as a nickname. I call my nieces loons all the time! Because they're bat shit crazy for the most part but they find it hilarious =) For a start its a great word to say!
Ha no FairyJen, didn't think you were being nasty at all. Its amused me that one. I like Luna Rose. Will see what DH says.
Thanks for the input!
