Luna Violet....Too far out or manageable?

Hello!
We decided tonight that we both love the name Luna. We think it is beautiful. It means moon but is also associated with magic and madness which is an idea we think is very cool ha.
Possibly will team it with Violet as a middle name as this was initially top of our girls list.
Keeping names and gender(once we find out in two weeks) a secret so can't ask for friends opinions so what do you guys think?
I myself have an unusual name (first middle and maiden name) and usually suffered from awkward spelling and mispronunciation due to this, tended to be known by a nickname til my mid teens. However this shouldn't be an issue with Luna as its pretty straightforward. Plus I now love my name and appreciate the fact I know nobody else with it, and never have!
So opinions please on Luna possibly followed by Violet. Mental or quirky?

Luna is a charming name. I know two, so it's not that unusual. Violet is pretty. However in a playground, as a combination of names it could become Violent Lunatic, you know how children are.
One or the other, not both together.

I think it's "dreadful" and if a footballer has called his child Luna it goes out of the "far out" category straight into the "what celebs name their kids" category. but I will adjust my answer to your "strict guidelines on how to answer a baby name thread"

Welly - because generally, people ask strangers on the internet their opinons, for that very reason - to find out what people really think, rather than the polite "er, well, it wouldn't be my choice" or "It's quite unusual, isn't it" comments people would get in real life, by asking their friends.
IMVHO Viviennemary wasn't rude at all - she was being open and honest with her thoughts. If you don't want that, then don't start a baby names thread asking what people think!

I like Violet, sorry but Luna is quite pretty and also the name of a buggy - as has been pointed out I'm sure - and I'm not sure about the combination.

Your apologies fine and naturally accepted.
Of course I want an opinion. It's just that I would never dream of being rude with my opinion! Which is what some of you have been. Questioning our characters for 'saddling' a child with a name,as though our intentions are to be cruel.
If you wouldn't deem it polite or ok to say in the real world, why is it ok to say it safely in front of your computer screen?
You'll see that I have been welcoming of the polite negative reactions and actually taken away what they've said.
I just found it amusing that Dr's and Lawyers are 'serious' people. You've obviously never met our family!
But if it's fine to be rude, then we'll have another Ruby or Lily or better yet an Ellie yawn. That way they can be whoever they want to be,which will inevitably be just like everyone else.

I thought that was the very reason people would ask on Mumsnet for a totally honest and frank opinion. I certainly wouldn't in real life say exactly what I thought of a name even if I thought it was absolutely dire. Or wouldn't even say I didn't like it. Still I offended the OP and apologised.

She was rude about my comment about her child wanting to be a serious adult. Heaven forbid her child would want to be a doctor!

This is the funniest baby name thread I've ever read. Note to OP, if you choose any name, there will always be someone who doesn't like it. But if you're going to be ever so slightly offended by that, don't ask on MN!!

Fwiw, I love the name, Luna, dislike the name, Violet (but love the shortened, Vi as its my BFF's mum's name) and am very glad a couple of people pointed out that reversing the names turned it into 'Violent Lunatic'!!

Gorgeous name. Will become more popular I think as people like Frank Lampard have a Luna (and I read somewhere that the Beckhams wanted it for a daughter but then Frank had a daughter before them!). Love Dexter - ever since Dexter Fletcher in Press Gang which shows how old I am!

I love the name Luna Violet, wish I had thought of it. It's not often that I love a name, but this one I do. We liked Dexter for a boy too although I not sure if we would have gone with it in the end; we liked it because of the show so a bit odd. Also there are a lot of boys with x names around at the moment. Felix, max, Rex, dex, are all really popular where I am.

Its all right I suppose, same as any other name. Luna is quite common now because of Harry Potter and the moon thing. Have you thought about calling her Moon Violet instead? Violet is also alright.

Someone earlier raised a really good point about having a more traditional middle name for work which I had clean forgotten. Violet would work perfectly as a middle name and then your child can decide to use Luna or not use it as they want when they are older. It's fun to be creative with names. I work at an international company and was dealing with lots of travel across the organisation at one point. So many people don't use their first name at all unless it is just to book their flights and it was a giggle to see who was actually who. As an adult it really doesn't matter, it's kind of like using your maiden name at work.

I too have a French name and it got contorted into so many different things as a child I just ignored it after a while. DH is Dutch but has very English names (English mum) which the teachers and kids couldn't pronounce so he ended up being an Ellen which drove him and his mum mad - they had to use his middle name in school which was a bit more pronounceable! It wasn't until we lived in the UK that he finally was able to use his first name.

Children sadly will be mean, but I think they do just use the name as an excuse to pick on someone. If they want to be vindictive and bullying then they will find a reason no matter what the child is called. Same as some adults!

Luna is glorious! I am also a vegan hippy though! (Though not a nudey sort - I even change under a towel in the gym changing rooms.)
Not a huge fan of the Luna Violet combination, but I don't really think it matters what anyone else thinks!
