Is this name just asking for trouble or perfectly okay?

I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant with my first (don't know if we're having a boy or a girl) but I'm not sure whether one of the names we are thinking of is too out there or not. The day we found out we were pregnant I suggested this name for a boy and DP was adamant there was no way; but since then it has sort of stuck and now he is even more keen on it than I am! The name we are thinking of is Grover.

Because we've discussed it back and forth for so many months I'm not sure if I have clarity anymore over whether it's horrible or not, but we both really love it and it just feels right. It also goes well with the surname. What does everyone think - would it be unreasonable to call our son Grover?

Of course, it's possible that after all this we have a girl and this is moot

Wasn't it a character from Sesame Street? I don't mind surnames used as first names, but I'm not wild about it. I could tolerate it though.

Do you live in New Orleans and move in jazz circles? Otherwise, I wouldn't tbh.

Actually I like it. Sure it's a Sesame Street character, but I think it's still quite a cool name.

IMHO it's not a nice name for a child.

Have you ever seen Sesame Street? That's all I can think of, sorry. He's nice enough and all, but he's, well, a blue puppet.

It's quite nice but does remind me of the puppet.

We know about the associations with the Sesame Street character, Grover Cleveland, and Grover Washington; but none of these have been enough to put us off the name! I don't want to give my child a cruel name but we're both massively drawn to it and I really don't think it's too dreadful. I suppose we just have to wait and meet him and see if it still feels right then.

Grover Cleveland was a us president wasn't he? I quite like it... But it is quite out there.

I like the name, but I also think of sesame street, and also the potential play on words "groper".

I quite like it but then again I have never seen the muppets or sesame street so don't made the above associations

I don't think it's cruel at all. Our kids won't have seen Sesame Street and having an old jazz type name is fairly cool really. There are plenty of loopy oscars everywhere, and you aren't all imaging they live in bins.

This is why you never tell anyone your chosen name until you're introducing the baby.

It's a name I associate strongly with USA, and I'm not sure it sounds right in UK.

My strongest association is to the satyr in the Percy Jackson books.

I don't like it. It seems like ugly words start with 'gro' , too close to growl, grovel, grot, gross, groper etc.

At best he will be called groover at school at worst groper - or possibly grocer.
