Is this name just asking for trouble or perfectly okay?

I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant with my first (don't know if we're having a boy or a girl) but I'm not sure whether one of the names we are thinking of is too out there or not. The day we found out we were pregnant I suggested this name for a boy and DP was adamant there was no way; but since then it has sort of stuck and now he is even more keen on it than I am! The name we are thinking of is Grover.

Because we've discussed it back and forth for so many months I'm not sure if I have clarity anymore over whether it's horrible or not, but we both really love it and it just feels right. It also goes well with the surname. What does everyone think - would it be unreasonable to call our son Grover?

Of course, it's possible that after all this we have a girl and this is moot

If you really must....give it as his middle name so that he can choose later on whether or not he wants to be call Grover

I really like it, but, well the old Mumsnet advice of 'give them a solid middle name to fall back on' is wise here.

Grover James? Grover Dominic? Grover Sebastian? Grover Samuel?

I'm a secondary school teacher and have come across tons of far more unusual and frankly stupid names. I've never known a kid teased for their name either. The dynamics of bullying are more subtle than that - you're just as likely to have Buster taunting James as vice versa - and although an unusual name might make you raise an eyebrow the first time you hear it, it very quickly becomes just who that person is and you stop noticing it.

I think something very grandiose or linked to a particular character trait can backfire (eg a very timid Zeus or a thoroughly miserable Joy) but I don't think Grover is really going to get much sniggering. I started out thinking I didn't like it but I have really come round to it in the course of this thread!

If you & DP like the choice then why not just go for it, OP. I don't think Grover is an odd name. I like it. In terms of 'out there', there are names far, far more 'out there' than that. Its extremely unlikely children of his generation will even think of relating it to Sesame Street. Its way before their time. If adults take the p they're just being silly, but I don't truly think they will.

My generation would think of Grover Washington Jr tho, & thats cool

I cant really talk because all of our names are FAR from final and we are just stuck.
But I'm not keen, only because I would imagine a dog with the name.
Not the name I would imagine a child to have.
However it could be a game changer and everyone may want it in a few years.
Stick with it if you are happy to xx

Have Grover as a middle name if you must, then if the child loves it later he can always be known by it.
