Boys name inspiration needed! A sibling for Cosmo ……

Anjou · 22/11/2012 14:24

We?re due in late Jan/early Feb and we?re pretty sure (although not 100%) that it?s a boy. My husband and I agree on girls names 100%, but with boys ? not so much! Our little 18 month old boy is Cosmo, so we want a name that goes well with this. On my shortlist, (not necessarily my husbands though!) are:

Etienne
Stellan
Constantin
Iggy
Wolfie
Luca

Does anyone have any ideas of a good, kind-of-unique, strong name that would suit? I?ve gone through all sorts of lists looking for inspiration but feel I?ve looked EVERYWHERE now! All ideas are welcome!

Thanks.

Hedwig, I love Caspar! And thanks for all the suggestions mathanxiety. Casimir I love too but my husband scrubbed both of those from the list ages ago sadly. I like heaps of names, its my husband who's the picky one! All Biblical names are out too - his rule. He's not über-enthused by any name right now. Maybe I should get him on here instead of me. Iago is v cool but - again - totally identifiable with one source. Thanks so much though! I'm so grateful for all of these. Keep 'em coming! Smile

Have you considered Welsh or Old English names?
I give you:
Alban
Bran (pronounced Bron)
Elis
Gavin
Wyn

BellaTheGymnast · 23/11/2012 14:10

If we're going Welsh I love Geraint.

Love Lev too. And Cassius.

Pelham? PG Wodehouse's first name.

FunnysInLaJardin · 23/11/2012 14:21

Rafe (Raphael)?

FunnysInLaJardin · 23/11/2012 14:23

BellaOfTheBalls · 23/11/2012 14:31

Not read all the replies so sorry if I'm repeating things!

I have a Milo. I'm horribly biased but I still get a little shiver saying his name cause I love it so much! I love Stellan, Atticus & Etienne from you list, although the latter is French for Stephen.

Otto
Roman
Gabriel
Ezra
Marcus
Jasper

Kittenkatzen · 23/11/2012 14:38

anjou go with Stellan! Cosmo and Stellan sound lovely together, and whilst they do carry a theme I really don't think it would raise anything more than a passing second glance from anyone. It's certainly not a comical pairing by any means.

I would steal it from you but my surname begins with N so it wouldn't work pluss i'm not even upduffed yet

Frontpaw · 23/11/2012 14:40

What a load of cool names! I was expecting some Very Odd ones (as does happen sometimes on here) but I love most of these!

Where's the OP living/from? That may effect the choice of name (pronunciation, meaning, etc).

Anjou · 23/11/2012 17:32

Thanks guys. There are some great ones there too, although I have connections with quite a lot of them, (friends, kids of friends or just an association with famous characters/sources), so it kind of rules them out.

Ezra is one of my faves, but my husbands filter process strikes again, and he won't have it!

We're in Edinburgh (I'm English with some other bits and bobs thrown in) so in the main the Scottish accent here is quite a soft one. It' quite a Cosmopolitan place, (no pun intended!), so luckily there's quite a lot of diverse cultures - and therefore names - here.

I think Stellan is still the leader for me. I'm glad that the general consensus is that Cosmo and Stellan sound good together. It's just one of the things you have to consider, afterall. They're their own person and won't be linked with their sibling (in terms of being referred to) all of their lives. Stellan works throughout life, (I feel anyway). With Cosmo, I made my husband go through the following with me; "Hello, this is our baby, Cosmo", "Cosmo, get down", Cosmo, you're late for school", "Cosmo, do you want to think about getting a job?" etc etc. Stellan works for me! I've read my husband all of your suggestions and your positive comments regarding Stellan, and I think it's winning him over a little. Result!

I'n still open to suggestion though. We've another 10-ish weeks to go so .......

Smile

The only problem is that Stellan could be shortened very easily to 'Stella'.

Bessie123 · 23/11/2012 19:02

Pretentio?

BrightenMyNorthernSky · 24/11/2012 21:12

I love this thread! You have very similar taste in names to me Smile. In fact, you live very near to me too, I will be forever listening for a mum calling out to Cosmo and Stellan in the parks of Edinburgh now! Stellan is great, although I still think Magnus and Cosmo sound good together (I wouldn't let the toy put you off - Cosmo might even like his brother having the same name as one of his toys?). But then I have a Magnus so I am not very objective on this one.

As a final suggestion I give you Joachim. This has always been under consideration for our DCs (and is one which we may use for any future DS), so I just wondered if you might like it too?

cashmere · 24/11/2012 21:33

Alex from Blur has a Geronimo, Artemis and Galileo.

messtins · 25/11/2012 21:48

Geronimo? Really?

The only Cosmo I know has a brother called Jasper. His parents rejected our suggestions of Metro or Neo politan

Toby? Levi? Raffy ( Raphael or Rafferty)?

Laydeeinwaiting · 25/11/2012 22:24

I have to say I do like Luca(s) and Gabriel but of course all these wonderful names must also go with the surname and trying out first initial with surname :)
We could not decide on several names so gave each of our children 3 names each.
Best of luck choosing

GenericDietCola · 26/11/2012 10:09

Zinzan
Bertie
Rylan

Anjou · 27/11/2012 23:06

Great choice of name, BrightenMyNorthernSky! I do really like Magnus. Joachim is nice but my husbands 'no Biblical names' rule will never let it get on the list. I'll give you a shout if I hear you calling for Magnus in the park!

cashmere, although they're not at the top of my list, you have to love Alex James' fearlessness when it comes to naming his kids! This is just one of the many, many reasons he would make a good husband. Wink

Laydeeinwaiting, yes, the surname has to fit. We're lucky that our surname goes with quite a lot. We have to steer clear of names beginning with 'B' though. BJ is not a good nickname! Shame, as a girls name I love is Blythe. As I say, we're 99% sure it's a boy though.

Luca is still peeking over the shoulder of Stellan in the name stakes. (As is Jude to a lesser extent ... currently. That could easily change over the next few weeks though). I know Luca is much more popular than Stellan, but I do like it. Baskingseals made a good point, that Stellan may be shortened to 'Stell', (although I can't imagine many would shorten it to 'Stella', LadyMargolotta? Same amount of syllables, so not really a shortening?). Then again, if you want your name to be said in full, it will be. I'm sure we all know a Michael or a James that we would never think to call Mike or Jim; it's just not their name.

Sorry, I'm waffling now! Thank again for everyones input and interest. I'm sure lots of people reading this thread, as well as me, will take inspiration from all of your suggestions! x x x
