Hebrew girls' names?

MyLastDuchess · 12/11/2012 18:57

We are still stuck for a baby name, with DD due any day now.

Any ideas for nice Hebrew names? DP prefers names that sound a bit 'girly' (hmmm) so he will never let me have something like 'Vered' but there must be some other lovely names out there.

Preferably not starting with 'A', either :). Would love to hear your ideas!

Is Lydia hebrew? It's a name I am very fond of.

MyLastDuchess · 12/11/2012 19:05

I think it's Greek. I'm afraid it's too English for DP anyway :(

Do u want obviously Hebrew? Noa, Devorah, Leah, Hannah, Sarah, Sara, Ilana, Chaviva/Chavi, Ester, Rebecca, Rachael. Do u want more?

Good luck - why not wait to see what baby looks like when she gets here.

GrimmaTheNome · 12/11/2012 19:12

Ruth and Naomi?

I think Chavi would have to be avoided nowadays!

elvisola · 12/11/2012 19:14

Elisheva?

MyLastDuchess · 12/11/2012 19:14

TeaDrinker, I couldn't agree more but where we live (NL) you get three days to register the birth and after that it's a done deal and you are stuck for life! No such thing as changing your name by deed poll. So I am feeling the pressure a bit :)

Yes I was thinking really classic Hebrew, as DP doesn't want an English name (so it would have to be Rahel rather than Rachel IYSWIM).

Why Grimma?

Also Miriam, Yael or Yaeli.

TeaDr1nker · 12/11/2012 19:17

Saritt, Shullamit,

How come you only get three days. We have six weeks here, unless you are going to name this Shabbat, then I understand.

Selky · 12/11/2012 19:17

Tabitha?

TeaDr1nker · 12/11/2012 19:18

Also, Gabrielle/Gabriella/Michaelle/Michial/Raphaelle - can't get mor biblical naming after the archangels.

The list goes on...

MyLastDuchess · 12/11/2012 19:19

I think she's thinking of the English pronunciation which would be 'chavvy' ... But we can say a proper Hebrew 'ch' here in Amsterdam!!!

I love Yael. Not sure what DP will say ... Also love Rivka and Noa but these are unfortunately out as we already have them in the family (same with Rachel and Ariel).

Libby ('my heart/my love'), Elia, Tamara, Ella, Dana, Mia, Adina, Mika, Ronit, Hannah, Ora, Liora, Liat.

I have a good friend called Chavi. She doesn't like it much.

MyLastDuchess · 12/11/2012 19:22

Why 3 days, I've no idea - just Dutch law. It's 3 working days though, so if there's a weekend in the middle you get extra time. I'm Australian & find it a bit odd - I mean, what's the huge rush all of a sudden Grin. But that's the law!

Shoshana?

MyLastDuchess · 12/11/2012 19:24

Oh, there's also a Liorah in my family already. And a Tabitha. All my fave names are already taken :(

Liat is lovely though.

Please not Avishag! (DD has a friend called Avishag.)

DD's other friends: Avital (Talli), Noa (several of these), Maayan (nice, but no-one can pronounce; she has given up and goes by May-Anne pronunciation), Shai/Shay (ugh), Ori, Ziv (like this one a lot!), Liana and Ilana (I think these are twins). Also know an Elisheva, Yael, Liora, Tamar, Idit, Zahava (also like this), Ahuva (ugh), Nitza, Tal, Hagit (ugh), Sigalit (better). Oh, and an Esther and a Rivka. And a Ruti.

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/11/2012 19:40

DD2 was going to be Abigail, but it is pronounced "Avigoyl" in Hebrew (according to her Israeli godmother) which is less pretty. Hmm
