Baby names

Hebrew girls' names?

We are still stuck for a baby name, with DD due any day now.

Any ideas for nice Hebrew names? DP prefers names that sound a bit 'girly' (hmmm) so he will never let me have something like 'Vered' but there must be some other lovely names out there.

Preferably not starting with 'A', either :). Would love to hear your ideas!

Hepzibah would have been my (now imaginary) DD's middle name. I believe it means "my love is in her".

Another vote for Yael!

Serach/Serah,
Bithiah/Bitiah, (I think this is the girliest of them)
Davidyah,
Ketziah,
Ilana,
Nessia,
Shlom Tzion/Salome Alexandra,
Athaliah/Ataliah,
Ayelet,
Elisheva,
Ezrasheva (have seen the last one, I love how it flows though it's likely a mash name rather than traditionally used).

I know (Israelis) a:

Ahuva
Almog
Vardit
Ronni
Sarah
Lina

I like Vardit ('vardeet') best, I think.

Hepzibah, Hepsi or Epsi for short.

Or Eppy, as in Silas Marner?

Eliana is gorgeous.

Is Intifada a typo, DrSeuss? No-one would call a child that surely!!!

Fillybuster · 12/11/2012 19:51

Sorry, not Tzipporah, I mean "Sephira" which does mean flame.

Report
Fillybuster · 12/11/2012 19:50

Shoshana is very dated - a bit 'old lady' these days, and the only Rifkis and Malkis I know are my great aunts!

I like Eliana, Liat, Tamara, Elia.

Or what about Lavannah (new moon) or Tzipporah (flame)?

Abigail?
Zipporah?
Intifada?

Job's daughter was Jemimah (with the h, unlike the puddleduck...). It means dove.

DD2 was going to be Abigail, but it is pronounced "Avigoyl" in Hebrew (according to her Israeli godmother) which is less pretty. Hmm

Please not Avishag! (DD has a friend called Avishag.)

DD's other friends: Avital (Talli), Noa (several of these), Maayan (nice, but no-one can pronounce; she has given up and goes by May-Anne pronunciation), Shai/Shay (ugh), Ori, Ziv (like this one a lot!), Liana and Ilana (I think these are twins). Also know an Elisheva, Yael, Liora, Tamar, Idit, Zahava (also like this), Ahuva (ugh), Nitza, Tal, Hagit (ugh), Sigalit (better). Oh, and an Esther and a Rivka. And a Ruti.
