Confirmation name. Unusual is good.

DD1 needs a good, Catholic saint's name for her confirmation. She would like something different, but honourable.

She came to a depressingly bad end though didn't she Ken?

kenanddreary · 09/11/2012 20:14

Sadly she did. But certainly an honourable name.

Annunziata · 09/11/2012 20:52

Annunziata! Can you take the Marian names?

I'm Veronica. Patron saint of laundry, I must have knew what was coming to me!

Rita, Scholastica, Marcella, Sabina?

Annunziata · 09/11/2012 20:58

Appollonia? Patron saint of dentists?

weblette · 09/11/2012 21:03

Another Bernadette here although I had just been to Lourdes!

ChestyNutsRoastingAnOpenFire · 09/11/2012 23:57

Mine is apollonia, patron saint of dentists, a virgin and died rather than renounce her faith Smile

FarelyKnuts · 10/11/2012 00:27

Mine was Laura. She was a Martyr who was boiled in oil I was a weird child :o

Viviennemary · 10/11/2012 14:07

I love Cecilia. What about Veronica. I like this one although it's probably considered very old fashioned these days!

Viviennemary · 10/11/2012 14:08

Didn't see your post Annunziata!!

LadyMargolotta · 10/11/2012 14:08

I chose Cecilia because of being the patron saint of music.

SecretNutellaFix · 10/11/2012 14:20

My confirmation name is Carmel. I had to write to the Bishop at the time to explain why the name had especial significance for me. He allowed it on the basis of my reasons and also my other two given names were already names with religious significance.

squoosh · 10/11/2012 20:26

Mine is Margaret (boring).

A girl in my class chose Madonna, had to write to the bishop to explain her reasons. Or at least, her pretend reasons.

There certainly are some arse ugly saint's names.

nooka · 10/11/2012 22:12

I chose Zita because I wanted to have a Z as one of my initials. I don't recall anyone asking me why, but my ultra Catholic grandmother managed to find a little brochure on St Zita (apparently you can go and kiss her mummified body) so I guess I could have blagged something from that.

Much to my surprise my father confessed the same motivation (he chose Francis Xavier for the X).

MrsHBaby3 · 11/11/2012 15:08

The Dictionary of first names by Penguin has a saints section at the back, listed by date,so perhaps theres a saint for her birthday? She can have boy saints too, think of nuns: I know a Sister Paul, Sister Anthony, etc
I picked Genevieve (and was never asked why, but officially its similar to my mothers name, unofficially there is a rumour I was conceived it Paris, so perhaps it was better I wasnt asked!)
but how about
Frances
Tatiana
Roseline
Adelaide
Catherine
Georgia
Adela
Camilla
Colette
Matilda
Lucy
Gemma
Sophia
Susanna
Angela
Paula
Alice
Emma/Emily
Alexis
Anne
Felix
Lelia
Clara
Jane
Natalia
Phillipa
Josephine
Dorothy
Florence
Victoria
Elizabeth
Felicity
Eve

My son unofficially chose his on the basis it apparently makes him sound like a super hero/ cartoon character, with the combination of other middle names and surname, officially because hes a great saint.
Good luck!

mathanxiety · 12/11/2012 01:48

Anastasia (means Resurrection -- central to Christian faith)
Gabrielle (angel Gabriel -- she could look at the message of Gabriel for inspiration for her essay)
Theodosia (means 'God's gift' -- gifts of the Holy Spirit?)
Judith (beheaded Holofernes; good fierce name, DD1 chose it)
Natalia (refers to birth of Jesus)
Madeleine or Magdalena (disciple of Jesus)
Jane Frances de Chantal
Thais (lived in the 4th century in Roman Egypt. There is an umlaut on the I afaik, so Tie-EE-se)

Here's a long list including some wild and wonderfully obscure names
