Irish boys' names - help

Hi there,

DH and I are really stuck for Irish boys' names. We're both Irish and our DS1 has an Irish name (Oisín). DS2 is due next month and we are at a standstill. We definitely want another Irish name, and preferably a little more unusual than Conor/ Seán/ Aidan, but we just cannot agree.

He loves Fiachra and Ferdia. I am not a fan. I think they sound a bit 'Lord of the Rings' TBH and also boys' names ending in 'a' are not great in the UK as they sound quite feminine.

I love Ronán and Aodh. He hates them. He has also ruled out Liam and Dara (I know it ends in 'a' but I do quite like it) which I quite like.

So - help! The only names we have come up with which we could both live with, we think, are Conn and Daithí but I don't love either of them. Any ideas?

Anna
xx

Ailbe
Carrick
cathal
Iollan
Pierce
Tadhg

I'm with your husband, I think Ferdia ia a great name.

Aodh for a boy living in London would be a headache, no one would have a clue that it's just pronounced A.

I like Conal and Cormac too.

squoosh · 24/09/2012 19:06

Don't know where I got London from!

mummylouise · 24/09/2012 19:11

What about Finlay or Colm?

amck5700 · 24/09/2012 19:14

Don't know where I got London from!

cos the OPs name is LondonAnna35??

squoosh · 24/09/2012 19:16

That could be it Blush

My mind is in wine addled bank holiday mode.

amck5700 · 24/09/2012 19:17

lol - no bank holiday here :)

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 24/09/2012 19:19

Lochlain?

Love the name Oisin BTW.

LondonAnna35 · 24/09/2012 19:21

Do I take it from the complete silence on Conn that no one likes it? I know a few people have said they like Daithi but no comment on Conn?

I love Finbar; it has Cork connections I think

apachepony · 24/09/2012 19:36

Oscar was the grandson of Fionn and son of Oisin. Not a lot of people would think of it being an Irish name though...

amck5700 · 24/09/2012 19:48

Conn is a bit of a nothing name - it sounds like it's just short for Connor and is inoffensive but a bit boring maybe - sorry :)

AThingInYourLife · 24/09/2012 20:08

Conn is quite nice. There was a cute little speccy Conn in DD1's nursery class last year.

My Dad is Con, so I have that "ick, my parent's name" thing with it.

AThingInYourLife · 24/09/2012 20:09

And where is there a bank holiday today?

amck5700 · 24/09/2012 20:11

AThingInYourLife - Weedgieville (Glasgow)

AThingInYourLife · 24/09/2012 20:12

Glasgow has a special bank holiday that the rest of Scotland doesn't get?

squoosh · 24/09/2012 20:13

Yep. I don't question it, I just say 'yes please'.

amck5700 · 24/09/2012 20:14

All places in Scotland have different bank holidays to the rest of the UK and mostly each other.

Sometimes at work we get forced to take the English ones even though our kids are in school :(

amck5700 · 24/09/2012 20:17

It should have been our local Bank Holiday 3 weeks ago but the kids didn't get it this year as they had 8 and a half weeks summer holiday and had only been back 2 weeks - doesn't stop them in a normal year when they have had over 7 weeks off - they go back to school and less than 2 weeks later they have a bank holiday - it's weird!

AThingInYourLife · 24/09/2012 20:19

I used to live in Scotland. How did this weird bank holiday policy escape me?

squoosh - yes, that's been my attitude to all these royal holidays we've been having over the last few years :o

topsyturner · 24/09/2012 20:22

My DH is Fearghal , and I never hear any babies called that ?

amck5700 · 24/09/2012 20:37

I never really noticed until I moved to central scotland - now notice all the different holidays all around me.

LondonAnna35 · 24/09/2012 22:19

Thanks for the feedback on Conn. Was pretty lukewarm anyway but this has definitely put me off.

Thanks for all the help, everyone.

I love the name Oisin (don't know how to do the fada - sorry) - if we had had a boy I was torn between that and Shay as a name. Also like:
Oscar
Oran
Turlough
Cian
Liam
Fionn
Finn
