Irish boys' names - help

Hi there,

DH and I are really stuck for Irish boys' names. We're both Irish and our DS1 has an Irish name (Oisín). DS2 is due next month and we are at a standstill. We definitely want another Irish name, and preferably a little more unusual than Conor/ Seán/ Aidan, but we just cannot agree.

He loves Fiachra and Ferdia. I am not a fan. I think they sound a bit 'Lord of the Rings' TBH and also boys' names ending in 'a' are not great in the UK as they sound quite feminine.

I love Ronán and Aodh. He hates them. He has also ruled out Liam and Dara (I know it ends in 'a' but I do quite like it) which I quite like.

So - help! The only names we have come up with which we could both live with, we think, are Conn and Daithí but I don't love either of them. Any ideas?

Anna
xx

Rian there should be a fada over the i.Its pronounced REEN.Irish for Ryan goes well with your other name.

AThingInYourLife · 26/09/2012 18:42

Rian has two (or 1.5) syllables.

Ree-un

not Reen

Sounds like somebody from northern Ireland saying rain!

[am I in trouble for saying that?] Grin

Conn is fantastic imho.
I think Daithi otoh would be something of a puzzle for English people.

How about
Luan (like the day)
Somhairle
Ruadhán (pr Roo-awn)
Moling - ancient Irish saint (pr Mow-ling)
Laserian - ancient Irish saint; the name refers to light
Fergus
Fionnán
Murtagh
Niall
Caoilte

Not mad about Conn OP. I hear 'artist' hanging in the air unsaid after it.

flowerygirl · 28/09/2012 13:16

Enda- love it

OrangeFireandGoldashes · 03/10/2012 07:43

Enda would get Edna over here (Enda Bolger invariably referred to "jokily" as Edna on horse racing forums).

Conal, Cormac, Fintan, Padraig, Cian all great names. Particularly Cian and Fintan. There aren't enough Fintans in today's world. Goes well with Oisin too.

OrangeFireandGoldashes · 03/10/2012 07:51

There's Declan too.

CheerfulYank · 03/10/2012 08:03

I love Declan (climbing here in the States now that we've overused Liam and Aidan to such a degree) or Deaglan.

I love Cormac and Conn, though you said you'd gone off that one.

I really like Cian and would know how to pronounce it despite being American because there's a Nora Roberts character called that. Blush

Padraig is rather sweet. Eoghan?

What did you go for. We have Niall and Eoin in London. Feel a bit bad for Eoin but we thought we were moving home and it didn't work out. Also both DS's were named after relatives.
