DH wants Wolfgang - is it really that bad?

I can't come to terms with the only boy name that DH likes - Wolfgang. I just can't. I do think he would constantly get grilled about his name when an adult - "Why did your parents call you that?" and there won't be a great, solid reason other than "Dad liked it".

Our existing sons are Felix and Theodore and I feel like Wolfgang sticks out like a sore thumb but what I want to know is, do you agree with me or with my DH?

Just to clarify, I do like it - in a vacuum - but it's just not right for my unborn son. We live in Australia - I'm aware it's common in Germany on older men.

Yes. I think you should choose a name you both like. It's not fair for one person to supposedly only like one name

If you feel you have to ask, then don't do it.

The only reason why my dd2 and dd3 are called what they are called is because one of us liked it. IMO its a splendid reason to name a child.

Honestly if he likes it and you dont mind it then go for it. If you don't like it back to the drawing board.

I have given him a shortlist of 6 or so names and he says no to all of them. We are seriously stuffed! Gosh I hadn't even thought of that guy xmesevebundle!

LOVE Wolfgang, especially with Felix (also very popular in Germany) and Theodore. I knew a Wolfgang a couple of years ago aged 23, delightful young man, nobody batted an eyelid about his name.

It might sound weird but before I knew I was having another boy, I really did like it. I guess when it became an actual reality to use it, I realised I liked the idea of it. There's a big difference.

Wolfgang went the way of Inigo, Ivo and Walter once I knew we had to name another boy - would be delighted to see them on other people's children, just not mine.

A child would get no End of teasing about That name...and his girlfriends would
call him..."Wolfy...".

DS2 has a little friend at nursery called Wulfstan nn Wulfie

(The Wulf bit is pronounced Wolf)

I think it is one of the coolest names I have ever heard - and it suits him to a T. Lovely name for a toddler, lovely name for an adult.

I prefer Wulfric.

I don't love it but I don't think it's weird and I think it goes well with your other names. I think Wolfie as a nn name is great though.
I like the name Walter nn Walt. If DC4 is a boy we have lots of names I love:

Hamish
Percy
Ambrose

I can't believe you're hung up about Wolfgang considering your current two sons names. I think he's more likely to be bullied sooner rather than later though. How about using it as a middle name instead.

Wolfgang goes nicely with the other two - but if you can't be doing with it, there's not much point persisting.

But "why did your parents call you that?" - what's wrong with "because they liked it"? - It's probably the main reason anyone chooses any name.

Germans/Austrians who would nowadays name their sons Felix and Theodor would possibly not chose Wolfgang, totally different sort of name.
I have no doubts the 23-year old is lovely, but come on that's a name typical for 50-70 year olds (and not necessarily a nice one either more like a Nigel in the UK, I believe), and certainly not one of those names you find in different generations such as Felix, Alexander, Philip, Constantin, Michael, etc.

Why someone would not only chose a name considered odd for a child in their generation and country, but also in the countries where the name is supposedly common/typical, is truly beyond me

I have taught a Wolfgang who would insist on being called Wolfie...he was an arrogant little so and so and I just couldn't being myself to use Wolfie....he want very popular with the other kids...they thought he was odd. Maybe he would be just as odd with a normal name but I do think he liked to use it as a power thing. I usually avoided saying the NN as out was ridiculous and all the kids laughed

Now that I think about it the reason I didn't use the nn (I always use kids MN if they prefer) is because it almost seemed like the sort of nn you use with a partner ie tiger, bunny, sexy etc ;)

I don't really like it, and more to the point I think naming your child should be a joint decision. It's not fair for your DH to say it's the only name he likes and refuse to discuss it further.

I for one think it's a great name and does actually go with your two other sons' names. It's what my sister is planning for a middle name if she ever has a son (family name). Wolf is a great nn.

Having said that, it's pretty outlandish for an Australian kid, and it's an old man name in Germany (not that that matters for you), and if you don't like it, then it's a no go.
