Teal for a girl?

Thoughts please?

Obviously there is the Abney and Teal connection, but I don't think it's overly associated with that, and it's a nice little programme anyway.

Um it's a colour. But it's a nice colour and it works for Scarlett!

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 29/08/2012 08:18

Is it also a bird? Or am I thinking of a tern?

Caerlaverock · 29/08/2012 08:21

Yes it is a type of duck, in know a boy called teal

AlexanderSkarsgardOhYes · 29/08/2012 08:22

It's a type of duck.

You may be interested to know that there were five baby girls named Teal in England and Wales last year.

I'm not normally one for nouns as names but having thought about it I really like this one!

Ambrosius · 29/08/2012 08:25

:) Very pretty

Jemma1111 · 29/08/2012 08:26

Really don't like Teal
How about Tia ?

lljkk · 29/08/2012 08:27

It's a duck. That was my first thought. I would not name my child after a duck. They are cute ducks (twitcher tendencies), but even so. Ducks poo a lot.
I would prefer Blue, Azure or Turquoise.

scaevola · 29/08/2012 08:29

I think of it as a gun dog name, along with Snipe, Widgeon and Mallard.

Badgerina · 29/08/2012 08:49

I know someone called Teila (Teal-ah) I think it's nicer.

seabuckthorn · 29/08/2012 08:50

Lovely name.

SoupDragon · 29/08/2012 08:51

You are naming a person, not an animal. They have to live with it.

AlexanderS · 29/08/2012 09:04

'Tis me, Alex, having had a little name change since I last posted!

The thing is, SoupDragon, not everybody wants to be one of three people in their class at school with the same name - I was, and whilst I didn't resent it in a big way I didn't really like it. I wished my parents had been more imaginative.

Caerlaverock · 29/08/2012 09:06

You are subjecting her to a life on the phone shouting 'no not Tia, teal t e a l, no not Tina. Teal, tango echo alpha Lima..... Oh fuck off'

AlexanderS · 29/08/2012 09:08
Grin
Frontpaw · 29/08/2012 09:08

What's your name?
Teal
Teeeel? What?
Teal
Can you say that again?
TEAL!
How do you spell that?
T E A L!

  • will now ook at mum, dad, friend... for clarification.
Oh, that's so... Unusual (or 'a stupid name')

Repeat about fifty times a day. I get this quite a bit and my name isn't all that unusual.

NCForNow · 29/08/2012 09:09

Very nice. I like it a lot.

Frontpaw · 29/08/2012 09:09

I have the 'pissed off' alphabet for such occasions...
A for arse
B for Bastard
C for Christalmighty
D for Dumbass, etc etc ect

PeshwariNaan · 29/08/2012 09:09

What Frontpaw said.

MammyToMany · 29/08/2012 09:11

I like it.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 29/08/2012 09:12

It's not the worst.

I agree that it's nice to have a name that is not common, dd1's name, although well known, is far from common.

I think you do have to think about their teenage/adult life and i think Caer makes a good point above, you will be subjecting her to years and years of spelling and explaining her name, which i would imagine would be just as annoying as having a much more common name.

I quite like it

There is imaginative and there is daft. All three of my children have been the only one in their class up to, in DS1's case, Y8. In Y9 another has joined his class. None of them has a daft name.

There a loads of lovely names out there for people. This is not one of them.

picnicbasketcase · 29/08/2012 09:16

No. Nice colour, nice duck, not a nice name.
