DS is due in October. We really like Toby and Thomas (shortened to Tom for everyday). Last name is one-syllable starting with W.

Would really like a couple more names to add to the list/see what DS looks like when he's born but have been struggling for months!

I love Alexander but DH says no :( We always loved Gabriel but I think the bullying potential is too high!! :(

All suggestions gratefully received! :)

Edward, Henry, James... and Gordon and Percy Grin

derekthehamster · 25/08/2012 10:09

There's a group of very close friend's at my child's school called Toby, Thomas and Gaby (Gabriel) Grin . Gabriel is becoming much more popular, and I've never heard of any name bullying. If you both like it, use it!

Thank you all for these great suggestions!

Feeling more confident about Gabriel now Derek Grin

All your suggestions out to to DH and he has vetoed all except Guy or Luke/Lucas. Hmm I really like Andrew and Sebastian but those got a resounding no. I may keep them on a separate I Pushed Baby Out My Fanjo So It's My Choice list that I will reveal after the birth.... Grin

Grin at Percy and Gordon

DH says if he can guarantee 4 boys in a row then it's easy - John, Paul, George and Ringo....

My DS is Gabriel. What makes you think the bullying potential is high? I've never been given any reason to think he could be bullied because of his name. He gets complimented on his name all the time.

Zara1984 · 25/08/2012 13:55

Alexander basically that's been the reaction from half of the friends and family we told that we liked the name! I know teenage boys will tease each other no matter what but still makes me worried :(

I think I'm just paranoid because my maiden name was very very tease-worthy and I was taunted about it from nursery right through to the start of university!

I still really love the name.... I think that if he looks like a Gabriel when he's born, then it'll stick. I thought of using it as a middle name (eg Toby Gabriel) but I want to save it too in case I feel more brave with a second DS Grin

Evan

AlexanderSkarsgardOhYes · 25/08/2012 17:04

Zara, what is it about the name Gabriel that you think is teaseworthy? I honestly can't think of a single reason why a boy with this name would be teased.

jaffacakehips · 25/08/2012 22:14

Other halts are SO annoying...just give him a list.

Gabriel, I've heard few comments along the line of its a bit feminine for what of a better word. I love it and suggested it for DD if she'd been an DS however I was told it was a bit gay, sorry Blush

NanaNina · 25/08/2012 22:20

Ah call him Toby .........I've got one and he's lovely and it's still not very common. There are too many Thomas's I reckon.

Craftyone · 25/08/2012 22:26

To quote the fast show ' Toby, a good middle-class name.

amck5700 · 25/08/2012 22:27

Miles

Zara1984 · 25/08/2012 22:29

Yep Alexander it's as jaffa says - the insinuation that it's too feminine. Possible schoolyard taunts friends and family have suggested Hmm:
Gay Gabriel
Gabrielle
Gay
Gaybo
Gabbi

Now I think that's all very immature but I just dread the idea of him coming home in tears, like I used to, because of cruel taunts about his name - ie all my fault. Sad I still love the name though...

DMIL admitted she wished she hadn't named DH's brother Julian for much the same reasons - he was really cruelly teased at school about his name. She told me not to tell BIL she admitted to that!!! He suits his name now though!

Nina Toby is probably in the lead right now! His in utero name is Tummy Toby Grin

DH helpfully suggested Hmm combining Toby and Gabriel into Tobriel.... err no.

I know of a few recently named Gabriels. It's definitely swung more into mainstream usage since I was at school in the 80s, when the pretty blonde girl always got to play the angel Gabriel at Christmas despite the Biblical character being male!

amck5700 · 25/08/2012 22:45

tbh - I would put Toby, Guy and Julian all in the same box as Gabriel as having a bit of a soft girly thing going on with them - I suggested Miles as I think it does too. If that's the kind of circles you mix in then it's fine and I don't see Gabriel as having any more bullying potential than any of the rest.

CanoeSlalom · 26/08/2012 08:28

Daniel
Matthew
Peter
Jasper
Saul

AlexanderSkarsgardOhYes · 26/08/2012 11:18

Children will always tease other children for being different - I got teased as a child for a birthmark on my face that nobody had any control over whatsoever. I don't think you should make important decisions based on what other immature people might say. It never ever occurred to me that Gabriel might be seen as feminine - Michael is also one of the archangels and a quintessentially blokey name!

jaffa, it actually kind of irritates me on this board when people just respond to a post with a list of names. The OP can get a list of names from a baby name book or website! She has come on here to get people's opinions.

Leftwingharpie · 26/08/2012 12:43

I really only come on here to read the lists of suggested names; posters group them together and connect them in a much more useful way than any baby name book.

ellangirl · 26/08/2012 13:20

Tobin?

GaryTankCommander · 26/08/2012 13:25

Edu Grin

Not sure the OP gets it, but as a Mother of a soon to be born boy, she soon will. Smile

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 26/08/2012 15:46

I think Toby and Thomas have quite different "feels" from each other.
Toby is less traditional. I'm not sure it feels very masculine to me. Thomas is classic, nice, but very popular.

I also really like/liked Gabriel for DS1 but it was vetoed.

Here are my suggestions:

More along the lines of Thomas:

Michael
Jack
Patrick

More along the lines of Toby:

Marcus
Evan
Leo

BergamotCourtyard · 26/08/2012 18:44

I agree with Jamie that Toby and Thomas have different connotations.

I know two public school Tobys, both round faced and very gregarious! Yes, Leo is in the same milieu. I would place Guy in this category as well, masculine and not foppish.

Thomas is classless. Have known people from all spectrums of society called Tom.

I would say George fits into this but its star is falling slightly due to football fans' love of George Best and Lineker's son (despite Charterhouse). William is also classless, from council estate to king. John and James too.

Edward and Gregory fit somewhere in between.
