What do we think of Moira??

Hi All,

What are your opinions on Moira? It used to be quite popular here in Ireland years ago but not so much in recent years-pronounced Moy-ra. Thnaks

Makes me think of Moira Stewart. It's one of those names that I can't imagine a
Baby/Child/Teenager having. It's a name for a woman 45-70 years old IMO.

Really like it. Girl at DD's school called Moira (she's 9). Strong, unusual name and she's clever!

There is a reason it's not so popular nowadays in Ireland it's awful!

I know a 90 year old Moira - I think it might be one of those 'granny chic' names that might take a while to come back into fashion! Having said that, there's nothing wrong with it and, just because it's not to my taste, it doesn't mean you shouldn't use it :)

'Fraid it conjures up bad images of someone who sweats a lot and has very pasty skin!

(I think this - rather specific description! - is based on it being a character in a book?! Can't remember......)

That being said, you should use the name you like and ignore us!

No its not even on our list but we were watching a film tonight & Moira came up in the credits, hubby & I both looked at each other & said not bad a name neither of us had heard in years. Just thought I'd get a few opinions to see what op think to see if it makes the cut for "the list"!!

I love it (family member). I also like Monica, which is quite close to it.

Loads of middle aged moira's in Scotland so that's all I see when I hear the name.

I prefer Máire, the "oy" sound in Moira is very harsh imo

Also makes me think of Mairaed (which I have probably spelled wrongly...).

I was at school with a Moira and it was old fashioned even then. She was very brainy too!

Makes me think of the right cow in Malory Towers. Or whatever the Enid Blyton for 'right cow' is.

I'm afraid Moira also reminds me of an older Scottish lady - nothing wrong with the name but I wouldn't use it for a baby. Sorry.

Prefer maire or Maura. I'm Irish and have never met a Moira, very unusual spelling.

I'm sorry, OP, I'm not keen on Moira. I agree with what was said upthread about the name not really being suitable for a youngster.

I knew a 17-year-old named Morven a couple of years back, which is another name that I don't think suits a young girl. It never seemed to 'fit' her, IYSWIM. I would choose something a little funkier.

I like Moira, though tend to think as a classic Scottish name but that's a good thing not outlandish but there's unlikely to be lots around, friend has just used it as a middle name for her dd after an Aunt- who is great funny and clever...

My mum is Moyra so I'm afraid it is forever linked with a slightly batty women (I do love my mum but she is nuts )

It's a bit of a stretch to say it makes you think of Myra Hindley!

chocolate that description rings a bell with me too! And there is big, sporty, bad-tempered Moira in Malory Towers.

I do think it is reclaimable though - I can imagine a wiry, dark-haired, tough little Moira.

It always reminds me of the baby Linda didn't love in The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford.

I put it in the same box as Linda, Pauline, Valerie, Sonia etc. Middle aged.
