I think (and I base my thinking on an interview I once read with Ms Lawson) that Nigel comes from Nigella, Nigella being a flower of some sort - African Violet maybe. Anyway, Nigella's granny/Nigel's mum cultivated these, and wanted a baby girl to call her Nigella. Only she got a boy, so called him Nigel.

Mario from Mary/Maria?

AgathaTrunchbull · 09/06/2012 21:33

Mario comes from the Latin name Marius. Has nothing to do with Maria. Maria in Latin is the feminised form of Marius.

Marion?

Lindsay was a man's name in Scotland and is now pretty much unheard of for a boy.
