Jubicece- all the ones you've mentioned are male originally

bronze · 09/06/2012 22:30

Sorry Jesses wrong way round too isnt it. Jesse is biblical isnt it

Jubilcece · 09/06/2012 22:30

Bah! I can't believe I can't think of any...

GnocchiNineDoors · 09/06/2012 22:33

Hmmm......okay, back to drawing board.

bronze · 09/06/2012 22:34

Feel like I'm putting such a downer on it. It's not like I've done much better. In all the names inthe world we seem to have found a grand total of 2!

GnocchiNineDoors · 09/06/2012 22:35

Dorcas is a biblical woman's name but surely that's actually used for men?

Bernice

GnocchiNineDoors · 09/06/2012 22:36

Hmmm...googled Dorcas and apparently a girls name nowadays too.

This is hard!

LaVolcan · 09/06/2012 22:42

Julian was once a woman's name as in Mother Julian of Norwich in the 14th Century.

I can't think of any other names off hand which were once female and are now men's.

Jubilcece · 09/06/2012 22:45

I hope I have found one.... Dylan. It seems to come from Dylana!

Dylan

bronze · 09/06/2012 22:49

oooh well done

GnocchiNineDoors · 09/06/2012 22:52

I know Dylan is now a boys name, but could you use it for a girl? I'd love to use Elliott for a girl, and Dylan sounds good too.

Jubilcece · 09/06/2012 22:54

I think you could use Dylan for a girl. People use Cameron for a girl and that is a similar thing isn't it?

Jubilcece · 09/06/2012 22:56

Not so sure about Julian Although I think it is nice for a girl!

Jubilcece · 09/06/2012 23:02

How about Artemis. She is a goddess...

Jubilcece · 09/06/2012 23:18

Article about gender neutral names. Interesting...

redrubyshoes · 09/06/2012 23:33

Timothy sounds more feminine than masculine. It would be pretty for a girl.

I always get a little Confused when a girl is named something like Madison or Mackenzie which means 'son of'.

I know a massive Welsh bloke called Beverly.

chelspa · 10/06/2012 21:18

I read that Douglass was once a girl's name.

I am a male Chelsea, but even that was once used more on males I believe.

EdithWeston · 10/06/2012 21:21

Cruz (Spanish female name, one of the appellations of Mary)

Also in US, Aubrey (from Auberon, King of the fairies) and even Maxwell are now sometimes encountered on girls.

chelspa · 10/06/2012 21:33

Yeah Artemis is a good one and now I remember reading about that too.

Another one maybe is Erin since I don't think it has roots in being a boy's name but has been used on boys.

Interesting how many people are reading the question the wrong way around which shows the extent of social conditioning that we have.

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 10/06/2012 21:37

My Nan was Phyllis and if we have another boy he will be Phyllip - nothing massive just simple but commemorative

abbypumpkin · 10/06/2012 22:34

I wouldn't have thought so. The history of the world is that males dominated and everything was masculine with females being 'inferior'. Most things started as masculine and many things have only been feminised due to women's rights /equality etc. as such I can't imagine there are names that started off female and were 'masculinised' it's just the way life has run it's course. It may be that as women become increasingly 'equal' some names may go the other way.
