Au-pair and cleaner.

QueenEdith · 01/06/2012 21:51

Not surprised you're running!

I like both names, particularly Magda.

tara0202 · 01/06/2012 21:55

My humble opinion. Quite like magda. Very grown up name. Really hate yvette. Can't see anything nice about it!

Beamur · 01/06/2012 21:56

I think Yvette might work if you're French.
Magda I just don't like - it sounds clunky and heavy.

Agaless · 01/06/2012 21:58

Magda is a beautiful name.
Yvette; just don't. It was the name of my concierge (cleaning lady busybody for the building) when a student in Paris. Also, look up Yvette Horner.

javotte · 01/06/2012 22:01

Yvette won't work even if you're French because all Yvettes are at least 70 years old (and yes, lynette, most of them were cleaners...)

Lunarlyte · 01/06/2012 22:19

I have always like the name Magda :)

Springforward · 01/06/2012 22:26

Not Yvette. Maybe Magda.

poppy283 · 03/06/2012 07:48

Not Yvette! It's horrible for above reasons.
What about Ines or Imogen? Can't think of any other yv girls names apart from Yvonne which is equally bad. Yves quite nice for a boy though...

Badgerina · 03/06/2012 08:57

Aren't they characters from 'Allo 'Allo??

AllRiseForHerVaj · 03/06/2012 08:59

Magda is quite cool.

Yvette is hideous.

anniewoo · 03/06/2012 09:01

Dislike both- Magda has a hard sound about it.

Janoschi · 03/06/2012 12:17

I actually like Yvette and Yvonne... I'm only against Yvette because I can't say it without it triggering off my stammer. But I really like it!

Janoschi · 03/06/2012 12:23

By the way, I'm not clear why you should refrain from using a name because it happened to be the name of a French cleaning lady working for someone you dont even know in RL!

Every name has good connotations and bad ones - surely your wee girl will make the name her own. I wanted Patricia for my DD and my OH's family were horrified. It's an old lady name! Oh it's cruel.

The Patricia I knew was a wonderful, intelligent brave woman who died tragically young. I was wanting to honour her and it irritated me that others kept banging on about Patricias I didn't even know. Still wish I'd picked it!

eversomuch · 03/06/2012 14:39

Magdalena is one of my all-time favourite girls' names, and I like the shortened form, too (but not quite as much).

Not crazy about Yvette, though.

Don't worry about other people's personal associations with the name (cleaners, concierges, etc). If you love them, trust your instincts. :)

DialMforMummy · 03/06/2012 15:07

Yvette is dreadful in English and worse in French.
Magda is SATC's Miranda's nanny. Also bad. Hth

MagdalenaAlec · 03/06/2012 18:41

Hoho Magdalena: it is my name!
I honestly do not really like it, especially when shortened to "Magda" (sounds indeed like a Polish cleaner..and I am comfortable saying this coming from a French/Polish background) but it is always better than my full first name: Sophie-Magdalena... Yes. As a single unit. :(
The other nn option my family uses is Lena or Leni.

I agree with most comments here, Yvette is indeed horrible in French (Yvette Horner).

TidyDancer · 03/06/2012 19:39

Not keen on either, but particularly dislike Yvette.

nizlopi · 03/06/2012 19:54

I didn't realise it was possible to give birth to 50 year old women.

SLVC · 03/06/2012 23:20

Magda is cool. Yvette is a bit urgh.

redrubyshoes · 03/06/2012 23:26

Magda is harsh and I think Olga when I hear it. I dislike names that end in 'ette' as well.

Annette
Antoinette
Jenette

etc

Just horrid.

Aquarium · 03/06/2012 23:54

Love Magda, not keen on Yvette.

CaoNiMa · 04/06/2012 01:54

Magda puts me in mind of a worn-out Polish au pair with a bad blonde dye job on the Northern Line.

Yvette sounds like some sort of 19th century Parisian prostitute.

kickingKcurlyC · 04/06/2012 09:43

I really like Magda. It's lovely!

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/06/2012 11:08

Yvette is my mother's name... GrinGrinGrin
