Elfie?

I heard it a few years ago as a customer of a company I worked for had named their child Elfie.

Is it too different? From googling I think variants are Elva and Elvie?

CoteDAzur · 30/05/2012 19:41

Surely not as a name. It sounds fine as a nickname.

GlaikitFizzog · 30/05/2012 19:42

Short for elphaba? I think it's cute fwtw.

QueenEdith · 30/05/2012 19:47

I know two, both Elfrieda in full. One would be a very old lady now, if still alive, the other 50ish.

YouFloatLikeAFeather · 30/05/2012 19:49

Not sure about Elfie sorry but I do like Effie which I think is short for Euphemia.

ellesabe · 30/05/2012 19:51

I would assume it was a boy's name as it sounds so similar to Alfie...

FatimaLovesBread · 30/05/2012 20:25

I think people might think it was just a mispronunciation of Alfie or short for Elfreda.
Hmmm

Ross noble's daughter is called elfie. I like it, but wouldn't call my daughter it as she would most likely be somewhat less than elfin in stature!

thegreylady · 30/05/2012 21:49

Elfi is a Turkish name for a boy or girl
Elfrida is a lovely old name which could have Elfie as nn

CoteDAzur · 30/05/2012 21:52

Elfi is NOT a Turkish name!

ellangirl · 30/05/2012 21:53

I know a Turkish 'elif', could that be it?

evamummy · 30/05/2012 21:55

Sounds like a little elf. OK as a nickname but not as a proper name imo.

CoteDAzur · 30/05/2012 21:56

Yes, Elif is a name. It is the Turkish version of the Arabic name Aleph, which is basically how they call their letter "A", first letter of the alphabet.

Puffykins · 30/05/2012 21:56

I know an Elfgaard - it could be a shortening of that?

CoteDAzur · 30/05/2012 21:57

Elif is a girl's name, by the way. It would never be a boy's name.

I would like to know which baby name website thegreylady is getting her information from so we never ever use it.

ShowOfHands · 30/05/2012 21:59

I know an Elfijn...

GnocchiNineDoors · 30/05/2012 22:00

Elfie is a NN of Elfaba.

Ross Noble's DD is called Elfie.
I like it Grin

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 30/05/2012 22:03

I love it, actually.

MarySA · 30/05/2012 22:03

Elfie??? Just plain daft. Sorry.

thegreylady · 31/05/2012 16:16

Cote d'Azur-my daughter in law is Turkish and my son and family live just outside Izmir. My dd-i-l's grandfather is called Elfi.My dgd who is 12 has a friend named Elif and another named Elfi-both girls.I dont use a baby name website and found the tone of your post beyond rude however I assume you couldn't help it. If you wish to check I can give you the old gentleman's full name and address-I am sure he would be highly amused to find someone questioning his name [he is over 90 and a gentleman].

Lannie33 · 31/05/2012 16:27

Sorry, not a fan of the name myself. I'm Canadian and reminds me of the furry alien Elf, on the TV show with the same name.

squoosh · 31/05/2012 16:33

Sounds like a South African trying to say Alfie.

I know an Elvi (boy).

MrsLetch · 02/06/2012 15:59

The older sister of one of my daughter's friends has got this name.

When I first met them, I wasn't sure...

But soon, it just becomes their name.

And now I quite like it!

I think it is a grower.
