Elfie?

I heard it a few years ago as a customer of a company I worked for had named their child Elfie.

Is it too different? From googling I think variants are Elva and Elvie?

Yep, got a little boy called that in DS's football class. But then we're in Australia - you get all sorts of weird interesting names out here.

Cotedazur I don't usually get involved in heated debates on here, but because someone disagrees with you it doesn't give you free reign to be rude. It may well piss you off that someone is saying something you disagree with but I find the tone of your post unnecessary. It's a baby name thread ffs.

As for Elfie, I see OP mentions Elvie as a variant. Could be short for Elvira, there was one in my family who was usually known as Vera.

I knew a German lady called Elfi (I am not sure if it is short for anything), it really suited her. I think it's a pretty name. I can't say I ever thought of Alfie or Alf (the terrible tv show).

This is about facts. I am right. She is wrong. "Elfi" is not a Turkish name. I know that because I am Turkish and I have lived in Turkey most of my life. She insists it is, because she knows one man who lives in Turkey by that name. And yes, this sort of thing is very annoying.

If anyone is interested, Google elfi isim (isim = "name" in Turkish) and see that there is not one website in the world that has those two words together. That is because it is not a Turkish name.

Might not be a disagreement in your eyes but you were still very rude. But if I ever need to check if a name is Turkish I know who to call, seeing as you are the only person who can give the definitive answer on all things Turkish. :)

Yes agree with Toni. DHs uncle and cousins are all Alfie's but, always said as 'Elfie'. We are cockney!

Must admit i have corrected mother in law a few times when she has said 'its ALFIE MOON, not a christmas elf'

Elfi is not a Turkish name. Not for a boy, not for a girl. Nor will it ever be, regardless of how many times you swear that you know an Elfi who lives in Turkey, whether or not he has Turkish citizenship.

I went to school with an Alfred (whose nn Alfie would be pronounced & written Elfi in Turkish, which is probably how the one you know got his name), a Lisa, a Lori (how we pronounce & write Laurie), and an Ira, all Jewish kids. A friend of mine married a Turk of French descent called Roje (how French Roger is pronounced & written in Turkish). They all have Turkish citizenship, yet their names reflect their foreign origins - Alfred, Elfi, Ira, Lisa, Lori, and Roje are not Turkish names.

Flipping heck this is getting ridiculous. The man I know is Turkish-you found his son by Googling. He has no Jewish, French or other origin. He is an elderly TURKISH man. A devout Moslem born and bred in a small fishing village on the West coast of Turkey. The first of his five sons shares his name. Please just stop it CoteDAzur-leave it alone now.

I think Elfie would suit a little elfin girl. If she is a solid or tomboy type it might be harder to carry off, particularly in adult life.

OP, were you thinking of it for a girl then? seeing that most of the non-Turkish argument posters have heard of it as a girl's name?
I've only seen it as a boy's name so far. But things are odd here.
