[grin] The pharmacist asked today if my DDs name was "actually a real name"

Grin love it. BUT feel bad that I missed a great opportunity to say "did you mean that to sound as rude as it did?"

Fwiw, DDs name is a three letter nickname of an older name, so I though I might get a comment or two throughout her life, just today was the first (at 5mo)

He actually came over to look at her, asked "So, is that, like, a real name" so I replied "yes, but I suppose it is a nickname of a more 'real' name, which is my mother's name and seemed to 'old lady' on a baby", he then said "well, at least it'll make for cheaper football shirts, my brother is Abraham, my poor parents" and Grin ed.

ooh what is the name? Is is Meg?

ReelAroundTheFountain · 29/05/2012 20:20

Flo?

Sinkingfeeling · 29/05/2012 20:20

Oh, very forthright! I told my Mum when I was pg that I liked the name Freya, and she immediately said that she hated these 'modern, new-fangled names that don't sound like proper names'. She was very disbelieving when I told her it was Old Norse. She's only have been happy if we'd chosen a very classic/regal name like Victoria or Charlotte Grin

There's a Meg in my class at school. What's 'not real' about it?! Some people are bizarre.

balia · 29/05/2012 20:29

There were 3 Freyas in my baby massage class and there were only 8 babies! Very embarrassing.

BillyBollyBandy · 29/05/2012 20:41

DFIL suggested Meg as I liked Maggie but DH didn't like Margaret or Maggie.

Meg is an ace name!

Indith · 29/05/2012 21:01

Grin yes Margaret is a bit old lady. Tis my dd's name though :) She is 3 and mostly called Daisy, she answers to Margaret, Meg and Peg too :)

Psammead · 29/05/2012 21:02

Meg is lovely! Name and baby Smile

GnocchiNineDoors · 29/05/2012 21:05

Grin DD gets Peggy too, from one relative. I would have gone with Maggie, but it's what my DMum is known as, and thought it would be weird.

They actually had her on their system as Megan, which was rather presumptuous.

I did call DD Pheobe for the first week (our cat's name) Blush

I like Meg.

But I just called my baby Shirley, which makes everyone do the fixed smile/grimace thing when you tell them Grin

GnocchiNineDoors · 29/05/2012 21:24

Shock that's brilliant, and very brave.

Tbh, I would be tempted to do that just for the reactions.

When dd was a tiny baby I was asked if her name was made up.

She is called Eliza Hmm

And the Dr receptionist keeps calling her Elisha. So bloody annoying.

Meg is a lovely name. I very nearly called dd1 Megan.

GnocchiNineDoors · 29/05/2012 21:35

I was also asked by an American what my (very complete and never ever short for anything) name was short for. In all fairness, it's a name they obviously mustn't have in the US, but it did make me chuckle.
