[grin] The pharmacist asked today if my DDs name was "actually a real name"

Grin love it. BUT feel bad that I missed a great opportunity to say "did you mean that to sound as rude as it did?"

Fwiw, DDs name is a three letter nickname of an older name, so I though I might get a comment or two throughout her life, just today was the first (at 5mo)

He actually came over to look at her, asked "So, is that, like, a real name" so I replied "yes, but I suppose it is a nickname of a more 'real' name, which is my mother's name and seemed to 'old lady' on a baby", he then said "well, at least it'll make for cheaper football shirts, my brother is Abraham, my poor parents" and Grin ed.

Is he from overseas? It's the only way I can conceive of someone asking if it's a real name? How odd!

MmeBucket · 30/05/2012 02:47

When I read the title, I was expecting some name like Hat or Toast or Zzrmqp. What an odd question about a perfectly reasonable name.

GnocchiNineDoors · 30/05/2012 09:26

Not a Catherine, I'm a Gemma.

The Americans I met thought it was pronounced with a G like Gold rather than like Giraffe Grin and that it was short for something.

I know, MmeBucket if I'd known I was going to get Hmm over Meg i'd have gone with Tararabumdiey like I wanted.

Meg? Surely that is perfectly normal name? Surprised he hadn't heard it, and even more surprised he had the cheek to ask you about it.

However, people are very strange.... Years ago as a student I worked in a shop and had a badge that said, "Trainee" as it was only about my 3rd week in the job. I had a customer ask me if that was my name Confused Hmm

Lunarlyte · 30/05/2012 14:26

Well, if Meg as a stand-alone name weirds out your pharmacist, I can only assume that s/he has led a very closed life.

Next time, fire back!

RabidAnchovy · 30/05/2012 14:46

Can I just say was disappointed that her name was not Zog or Lop or something really weird. Meg is lovely (makes me think of little women)

Frontpaw · 30/05/2012 14:52

Has she never heard of Meg Ryan?

CheerfulYank · 30/05/2012 15:39

Oh. No, we don't have Gemma's, at least we haven't, but that is about to change I think. Catherine Bell and Kristin Davis just had Gemmas. :) Lovely name, I think!

Meg does sound like a real name.

Mog not so much.
