It is suggested on some misguided baby name threads, how do you say it?

Chandon · 22/05/2012 14:31

clearly is pronounced to rhyme with

Whatevahhhh

And must be pronounced like a teenager would pronounce "Never"

EBDTeacher · 22/05/2012 14:33

Oh I bagsy Yppah for DC2.

I'm going to pronounce it Yappa.

Get0rfMoiLand · 22/05/2012 14:40

It is the kind of name used by people who use lol as punctuation lol

I'd have a stab at 'Nev-ee-ay'.

Actually I'd have a stab at the parents.

EBDTeacher · 22/05/2012 14:43

I've now decided to pronounce Yppah 'ee-pay' like Ebay.

Firawla · 22/05/2012 14:45

I say neh-vey-a, i actually like it - not that i would use it but i think its pretty although quite tacky!

Get0rfMoiLand · 22/05/2012 14:49

MmeBucket · 22/05/2012 15:13

Oh, good lord. I'm in America and DS goes to school with 2 of those (both of whom, I might add, have been taken away from their parent(s) and had custody awarded to their grandparents, although I'm pretty sure it isn't just because they were given a stripper name) and here it is pronounced nih-vay-uh.

5madthings · 22/05/2012 15:27

ne vay uh? dunno i saw one of the mums on 16 and pregnant called her daughter that she was never on any of the follow up shows tho. its a bloody awful name and i am quite accepting of odd and unusual names etc!

bronze · 22/05/2012 15:43

Teacher I'm glad you changed it to an ee sound. I was beginning to worry. I would go for ee-pah (sounding the pah so as not to sound like a battlefield) but ee-pay could be a dialect thing

ButterPecanMuffin · 22/05/2012 16:11

The rock star and his wife who "invented" the name, when they bestowed it on their daughter (and thus started the whole Nevaeh trend), pronounce it as neh-vay-uh, so that is the original (and proper?) pronunciation.

I prefer to pronounce it 'what in God's name what these parents thinking'.

Also found in the US:

Semaj - it's James backwards and pronounced seh-maj. Found on both genders but more "popular" for boys. More "feminine" forms are Semaja and Semajah.

Legna - it's angel backwards and is pronounced lay-na (the g is silent).

It all makes so proud to be an American. weeps

squoosh · 22/05/2012 16:13

Which rockstar spawned this monstrosity ButterPecan? Oh and by monstrosity I mean the name not the child! Grin

Voidka · 22/05/2012 16:17

Some Christian rock band - his name was Sonny iirc.

Get0rfMoiLand · 22/05/2012 17:51

Grin at christian rock band

Rock on!

OP posts:
squoosh · 22/05/2012 17:53

If that's what Christianity does to a person . . . . .

EssentialFattyAcid · 22/05/2012 17:57

Like Nivea the face cream

bronze · 22/05/2012 18:05

Sonny sandoval

PickledFanjoCat · 22/05/2012 18:09

It's doing the rounds big in Wales.

I fancy susej. I might go for that next.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/05/2012 18:14

FGS. That's how I'd pronounce it.

I used to reg births and I tell you we had some cracking names - most often I would try to talk parents out of dodgy spellings of otherwise normal names. But would they listen? Would they bugger. One of my best was a mum who wanted to name her child Seeobarn. I must have looked like this ---> Confused Twas Siobhan but she didn't know how to say it never mind spell it.

Get0rfMoiLand · 22/05/2012 18:28

Did she register the baby as Seeobarn in the end saggar? Bloody hell. Grin
