Sholto? What do you think?

We are expecting DC3 and after being really pleased with DS1 and DS2's names we cannot think of a 'perfect' boys name. We tend to have a shortlist and then decide once baby is actually here but I can't even get that far.

As the title suggests I really like Sholto but DH is not sure, I also like Magnus, Miles, and Murdo and DH likes Gregor, Angus, and Fergus but we are both a bit meh on each others choices.

Surname is double barrelled and starts with C

Nah, call him Fraser.

sydenhamhiller · 28/04/2012 18:34

Love Sholto, and esp if you are Scottish you can totally get away with it! As a previous poster said, what about Ivo?

I loved it but DC3 is going to be a girl...

DogEared · 28/04/2012 19:05

Sholto is a bit affected IMO. Murdo is the best.

AhsokaTano · 28/04/2012 21:18

Love Murdo but DH doesn't, it's his least favourite. I don't really like Ivo, don't know why but it just sounds like an unfinished Ivan to me.

Douglas is fine but isn't grabbing me really. I like Hector but don't like the thought of a possible shortening to Hec as a teenager.

Monkeymamma, is Clem short for something or a name in itself?

I LOVE all of these FAB names and one of my (Scottish) sons has one of them (not saying which). Sholto is a bit "out there" compared to the others, but who dares wins!!I like Sorley myself!!

FrauGrau · 30/04/2012 18:57

Actually, I like Hector too. Have you read Katie Morag and the Big Boy Cousins?

monkeymamma · 01/05/2012 09:04

I was at school with a Clem and it was just the name in itself, but I imagine it is also short for Clement or (more exotically) Clemens.

bigbluebump · 01/05/2012 09:07

I think Sholto is great - classic, masculine, not overused and Scottish, so perfectly reflects your background. Hugh, Alec & Sholto sound great together!

Murdo is too close to Murder imo.

bigbluebump · 01/05/2012 09:08

The other disadvantage of Hector is the meaning of 'to hector' (to bully, torment). But yes, the nickname Heck isn't great...

Yeah, ny friend has a Fraser. Sholto sounds like a horse.

TheSurgeonsMate · 01/05/2012 09:12

I've never come across this name, I'm so surprised it's Scottish.

Cosmo?

I like Gregor and Hamish.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 01/05/2012 09:19

I didn't know Sholto was Scottish until this thread. I think it's a beautiful name.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 01/05/2012 09:20

Actually, just Googled and it says it's originally Irish, but presumably it came over to Scotland from Ireland and became naturalised.

FateLovesTheFearless · 01/05/2012 09:30

Never heard of sholto before either and I am Scottish. I don't personally like it. What about Lachlan or Struan? I also love Fraser.

Sholto sounds like a cowboy's name.

Magnus and Miles are ok. The rest including dh choices are pretty bad. Especially Gregor, that is my least favourite name ever (well, today anyway).

squoosh · 01/05/2012 10:40

Murdo is not good either

gaunyerseljeannie · 01/05/2012 10:46

Whit a crackin' name..... is it no fae the Clan Douglas? Anyway disnae matter whit clan ye are, nae other chiel will hae it.
Cannae believe some fowk oan here wha' call their bairns some bliddy awful names an' pit doon a guid Scots name like Sholto, though!
PS if yer no familiar wi' Scots ah'll gie a translation......

Pasiphae · 01/05/2012 11:32

Sholto and Murdo are bit...trying really hard to be Scottish at all cost? They seemed exagerated.

I think Angus, Fergus, Magnus, Miles and Gregor are much easier to live with.
Magnus is my fave, but I see it as more Scandinavian than Scottish.

Fergus is winning over Angus (beef). Gregor and Miles are nice, but do not have as much character as the others.

Snapespeare · 01/05/2012 11:45

I have a Murdo it is shortened to 'Mo'.

AhsokaTano · 01/05/2012 18:16

Gaunyersel: aye A'm away tae name the bairn after the laird!
