HONEST opinions please!

I'm 40+4 pregnant and we still don't have a boys name, which is driving my DH crazy!

He is absolutely in love with the name Hector - your thoughts please!

We have decided on a girl's name - Madeleine Claire - but then heard on the news today a story about Madeleine McCann, whose disappearance anniversary is next week. Would our little girl always be associated with her, or would the association blow over once the news stories this week are over?
I'm assuming our baby will be born in the next week!

I already have 3 DD and choosing a girl's name that works with the others has been a nightmare!

Really don't like Hector due to 'nagging' meaning.

Like Madeleine very much.

Not at all keen on Hector. And I wouldn't go for Madeleine although it's an ok name, in view of the sad case of MM.

Madeleine Claire is lovely, I wouldn't worry about the McCann link as to those who know you and your DD it will be her name not an abstract association.

I quite like Hector, if your not sure why don't you keep it in mind and see if it suits once baby is born, I discarded my favourite name because DS just didn't look like it, went with our second choice instead and it's much more him :)

I love Madeline, but dh vetoed it because of the McCann's, after he said that, I couldn't use it.

Honestly? I know a million little Maddies and I think it's boring, rather than making the McCann connection right away.

Hector's OK, if DH likes that then how about Victor, Frazer, Stanley... Or for a girl, Hester? Means star, I think it's beautiful.

I don't care for Hector because of the double meaning of bully or harass.

Madeleine is a lovely name and I wouldn't be put off by any association with the McCanns. It is not that rare a name. If you still have reservations, you might use the variation Madeline (pronounced like Caroline) like the heroine of Keats' The Eve Of St Agnes. That poem even has a happy ending :)

I'd definitely use Madeleine if you like it. There are lots of names associated with tragic events and people still use them, such as Meredith, Claudia, Holly, Jessica, Victoria, Shannon, Millie, Amelie. I know 5 children with these names.

Anyone important will soon associate the name with your daughter.

I like Hector, classic but uncommon.

Thanks for all your opinions ladies - am just as confused as ever! Just goes to show how no one name will ever get 100% approval. Just go with your heart I guess - if only I knew what that was though!!!

But if you like Madeleine, don't let the association with Madeleine McCann put you off. It's not so rare a name that people will automatically think of that case.

Until the anniversary came up in the news this week, my first thought would have been of the cartoon Madeleine (little French orphan), as we've been watching that on TinyPop recently.

Love Madeleine, I know a few so don't automatically think of the McCann connection. Not keen on Hector, sorry.

Have to agree that the meaning of hector would put me off. As would the lack of nice nicknames (Heck ).

Madeleine is lovely though. I would not think of the McCanns necessarily.

I LOVE Madeleine, and its shortlisted for our soon to arrive bundle. I dismissed it at first, but the poor little girl never did any harm, she's certainly no child killer or war criminal, and I think the prettyness of the name outweighs any negitivity.
As for Hector, I think its stirling. I love boys names that push the boat out, but still retain a classic charm. (Humphrey, Rafferty are recent ones I've met and adored, and ceratinly beat Ocean and Blaze)

Agree about the unfortunate meaning of Hector, sorry. I too love boys names 'that push the boat out but still retain a classic charm' such as Rafferty, Quentin, etc, but I just find the use of the verb 'to hector someone' is too common to dis-associate it from its meaning.

Some friends of ours called their daughter madeline, my first thought was of Madeleine McCann but not any more, it's just their daughter I think of now, so any early associations will very quickly disappear

Madeleine Claire is also lovely and I think the MM association really doesn't matter. Sad but true, most people (other than her family) will largely have forgotten about her in a couple of years except in a fleeting way every now and then, and I doubt anybody would automatically associate it even now - it's a pretty name and has been popular for a v v v long time: to not use it because of Madeleine McCann would be a shame.
