I'm 40+4 pregnant and we still don't have a boys name, which is driving my DH crazy!

He is absolutely in love with the name Hector - your thoughts please!

We have decided on a girl's name - Madeleine Claire - but then heard on the news today a story about Madeleine McCann, whose disappearance anniversary is next week. Would our little girl always be associated with her, or would the association blow over once the news stories this week are over?
I'm assuming our baby will be born in the next week!

I already have 3 DD and choosing a girl's name that works with the others has been a nightmare!

Thanks!

In general I think Madeleine is lovely and doesn't make everyone think mcCann, but the reason you thought of it is the anniversary this week, and as you're 40 + 5 it's going to be your daughters birthday this week, the one time when the connection is strongest. So given that I'd say no to madeleine. I love margot though!

I like hector but didn't know the meaning, it may put me off a little but I think that's up to you depending on how strongly you feel about meanings.

Margot is gorgeous - definitely go with that!

Lucien is nice, but not a patch on Hector

besmirchedandbewildered · 27/04/2012 20:11

Hector makes me think of "The Slap".

bringbacksideburns · 27/04/2012 20:11

Margot makes me think of Penelope Keith in The Good Life - please don't use it!

I like Madeleine.

Don't like Hector - sorry.

Noggie · 27/04/2012 21:28

I love Hector, Hamish, Archie, Finlay, Ronnie, Robbie etc
Really like Madeleine but it does make me think of the poor McCann family- we didn't use the name Meredith for our daughter for similar reasons.

MariahScary · 29/04/2012 10:40

Not keen on Margot. Marguerite is nice. Marianne also lovely. Mariella? Maria?

Hector is better than Lucien.

Bananna1 · 29/04/2012 11:16

Our other DD aged 16, 14 and 11 all hated Margot too. I actually am going to give up now until it's born - if it ever comes. Feeling very miserable at 41+1 with induction day of Wednesday looming :(

Madeleine Claire is a beautiful name if you like it use it. People may first think " McCann" but after that they will just see your beautiful baby. We still regular have Holly and Jessica used as names and Benjamin for boys they are not instantly thought of as Soham murders of Ben Needham

I ADORE Hector as a name wanted it for ds but dh dosn't like it.. (grr)

EATmum · 29/04/2012 11:34

Whatever name you choose will be your baby's name so whatever the current associations, they'll be instantly replaced with the best association in the world. Good luck for Wednesday - or sooner.

thegreylady · 29/04/2012 21:57

I have a cousin called Marie-Claire she has always been called by the whole name.
I also have a dgd named Madeleine who is exactly the same age as MM[within a week] .

Pollykitten · 29/04/2012 22:01

What about Martha Claire? And love Hector.

HatchedAtTheHutch · 29/04/2012 22:03

Love Hector

MsMarple · 29/04/2012 22:07

Not too keen on Hector - for the hectoring type connotations mentioned before - what do you think of Lysander instead?

(I know they don't sound the same, but it is the next hero name mentioned in the British Grenadiers song so it just came to mind!)

I really like Hector,

Dislike Madeleine (madda-lin) but i like Madeline (madda-line)

oikopolis · 29/04/2012 22:24

meaning of "to hector" is a bit too much for me i'm afraid. i wouldn't use it.

Madeleine is on my list, but i am not in the UK so it's a bit different for me. having said that, i do think that the name is useable and that people will (sadly) in time forget Madeleine McCann.

poppy283 · 30/04/2012 09:05

Hector's a bit strong for me, doesn't sound like a nice person, is it a Greek villain or similar? what about Hamish or Christopher?

Madeleine's very pretty but I too would be put off by the association with tragedy. How about Emmeline or Tamsin?

poppy283 · 30/04/2012 09:06

Or Coraline, Marlene, Catherine.

shoobidoo · 30/04/2012 13:56

I like Madeleine although the different pronunciation options would probably make me think twice about using it.

I really don't like the meaning of 'to hector' or 'hector' - I would not want my son to ask me why I chose a name for him that means 'to bully' Hmm. And I normally love less common names, but the meaning is just too relevant imo.
