DS2 is 2 weeks old and unamed, really struggling/stressing

We were going to call DS2 Barnaby (nn Barney) but somehow it just didn't come out at the hospital when they asked if we had a name and we haven't been using it.

DS1 (who is called Joe) has been calling the baby Freddie (and everyone at school thinks that's his name!) which I like but I think Freddie is too informal if he becomes a barrister or something and I dislike Frederick/Fred/Wilfred/Alfred

I have never really liked cutesy names ending ie/ey and am very confused now. I think I like(d) Barnaby as it's an OK BC name and Barney is an OK shortening but I don't 100% love it.

I feel like going back to the drawing board but there are no names I love let alone ones that DH likes too, ones that go with Joe, that go with surname etc.

What do I do?! Do I just go with Barnaby and it will grow on me? Or pick something new? To give you some idea of names I like... Josh, Jack (but I can't really have 2 sons both starting J can I?), Kit, Ben (DH vetoed both)

I am getting rather stressed now and would appreciate any advice... I have been trying to relax and hope it will come to me but it hasn't!

I reckon if you aren't using it it isn't the right name. Sometimes the names we chose don't suit the baby and you need to go back to the drawing board. Do you think that might be the case here?

Why can't you have 2 J's in the family? My BIL and his wife have 2 DS's beginning with J and it is fine. They have different middle initials. I wouldn't let that put you off if you love the names.

Maybe give him the middle name of Freddie so DS1 is happy.

What does DH like?

ThePsychicSatsuma · 06/04/2012 22:33

great list

AKMD · 06/04/2012 22:37

I love J names. I already have one J and DH and I are trying to avoid using another one for DC2 just because of post getting mixed up but we might go for it anyway.

Anonymousse · 06/04/2012 22:38

Thank you for the input. Exactly BBB - if we aren't using it maybe it isn't right. But then DH is the sort of person to never use anyones name

I worry that 2 J's would be too cutesy - I don't like it when siblings have a theme or sound similar. Plus I bet I would get them confused, plus their cousin is Jamie and DS1's middle name is also a J

DH says he likes traditional names but has volunteered very few/none. I think his last suggestiong was Hannibal (!)

Yes I am up for Freddie as a middle name

I will peruse that list thanks Satsuma

Calzone I like Theo & Ben but DH doesn't, I like Max but doesn't go with surname. Not keen on t'others but thanks

Barnaby shortened to Barnes?

OTheHugeManatee · 06/04/2012 22:49

You could always have Barnabas? That way he can be Barnaby or Barney as he wishes, and you don't have a cutesy name.

Downbytheocean · 06/04/2012 22:50

We have a Tom and are considering Joe for our second. Tom is lovely IMHO Smile

BigBoobiedBertha · 06/04/2012 22:52

That list is great and just goes to show the modern day doesn't have the monopoly on weird made-up names but I would steer clear of Orange, Curley and Gaylord. [bugrin]

I don't see the problem with two J's, and FWIW think that Joe & Josh is lovely. I don't think it's cutesy either - they won't be even remote 'cute' when they are strapping lads in the their 20's will they!? I personally kind of like it. You can also add in different middle names to help try and remove the issue of mix-ups with post which some people seem (IMO) overly concerned with. How much mail do people really get these days? It'll be much more reduced in 15-20 years time in any case.

I also think Barnaby/Barney is lovely, but if you really aren't feeling it, then drop it.

FashionEaster · 06/04/2012 23:18

If you just knew with Joe, then you need a name that will do the same again. Sometimes when they come out, they just are not the name you thought they were going to be! Am with Joe though, I do like Fred Grin and also your choice of Kit.

Joe & Archie
Joe & Bert
Joe & Albie
Joe & Huw
Joe & Frank
Joe & Niall

Excuse brief reply - on phone. Not sure I can do paragraphs either! Love Max but just can't have it with our surname - sounds rude. Love Tom too but DH is Tim. Not too keen on Rex or Barnabas
