We were going to call DS2 Barnaby (nn Barney) but somehow it just didn't come out at the hospital when they asked if we had a name and we haven't been using it.

DS1 (who is called Joe) has been calling the baby Freddie (and everyone at school thinks that's his name!) which I like but I think Freddie is too informal if he becomes a barrister or something and I dislike Frederick/Fred/Wilfred/Alfred

I have never really liked cutesy names ending ie/ey and am very confused now. I think I like(d) Barnaby as it's an OK BC name and Barney is an OK shortening but I don't 100% love it.

I feel like going back to the drawing board but there are no names I love let alone ones that DH likes too, ones that go with Joe, that go with surname etc.

What do I do?! Do I just go with Barnaby and it will grow on me? Or pick something new? To give you some idea of names I like... Josh, Jack (but I can't really have 2 sons both starting J can I?), Kit, Ben (DH vetoed both)

I am getting rather stressed now and would appreciate any advice... I have been trying to relax and hope it will come to me but it hasn't!

Michael?
Mike, Mick, Mikey

sashh · 07/04/2012 04:42

Stick Barnaby on the birth certificate but call him Freddie?

I knew a Gillian who was called Billie by all her family.

swiftybaby · 07/04/2012 05:22

I have a Freddie who is Frederick on his birth cert but it's never used. I love it and it really suits him. Stick with it?

Thumbbunny · 07/04/2012 05:29

I think the same as swiftybaby. He then has the choice later to call himself Frederick (or some variation) but will mostly be known as Freddie. I like Freddie, it's a nice name and it will make little Joe's life a lot easier! Wink

kittencuddles · 07/04/2012 08:47

What about:

Toby/ tobias
Ben
Daniel
Nathan/ Nate
Charles/ Charlie
Thomas
Henry/Harry

I think these go with joe but aren't too cutesy.

abbypumpkin · 07/04/2012 19:35

We had Josh, jack and Joe on our list. Also like Sam, Charlie, Adam, Alexander (Alex, Xander), Jake, Zack.
I don't see why you can't have two j's. It might cause a little issue when they're both old enough to be getting post but they presumably won't be living together for a lot of their older lives. I certainly wouldn't let it stop me from using a name I liked

abbypumpkin · 07/04/2012 19:39

Also, if you have a Joe (and not Joseph) then I don't see why you can't have a Freddie. I think there are enough of those names around these days (Charlie, Archie, Alfie, Harry, daisy, poppy) so it's not a problem. Freddie can be a barrister it's about character and ability not someone's name

Schlumberger · 07/04/2012 19:39

Met a lovely chap called Cassell the other day - known to his friends as Cass. Thought that was a very cool name - great on a nursery peg and great on business cards when chairman of the board.

Jess850 · 07/04/2012 19:44

We have a Joe and Dom. Good luck.

Jess850 · 07/04/2012 19:45

And Cass was a very famous West Ham hooligan :-)

Jess850 · 07/04/2012 19:46

And Cassell is my middle name - spooky - apparently it was a Family surname not sure why my Mum and Dad put it as a Girl's middle name defo better for a Boy.

WaftyCrank · 07/04/2012 19:59

I have a Joe (Joseph), his brother is Gabriel but that might not be to your taste.

Also on our list for DS2 and now again for DC4

Alexander
Jacob
Samuel
Matthew
Oscar

I do like Freddie though, he could always shorten it to Fred when he's older if he wants to? I have a friend with a Frankie, he's Frankie on his birth certificate but at 11 he decided he wanted to be Frank so he is.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 08/04/2012 22:41

I knew a guy called cassion too.. he was Cass for short. quite cool.

Ktmacca4 · 08/04/2012 22:43

Ooh I love names! My (only) son is McCarthy (Mac for short).

LondonNadiy · 08/04/2012 23:08

Francis, nn Freddie?

Barney is a little purple dino for me! Cassell/Cassion are v cool - might pinch 'em for my List!

J and J is no problems for sibs if you like the name - a fam of my friends are Marta, Magda, Michael and Mark, with a mother Marie, just give them different MN.

If you're not using the name you've picked by now, I think its dead.

Don't stress. DS was 6 weeks old before he had a name. It was only when DH mentioned that we ought to send out the new arrival cards that I pointed out that he didn't have a name. I think DH thought we'd call DS Squiggly for the rest of his life :o

amatuermummy · 09/04/2012 13:13

How about Samuel/Sam?

Chunkamatic · 09/04/2012 21:17

Finn? Sounds good with Joe.

Anonymousse · 10/04/2012 16:58

thank you so much for all the input. I am absorbing & thinking. I like Sam (not Samuel) but like Joe it could be thought of as a girls name and I'd rather have something more masculine. I realise I'm being a perfectionist here though and am going tohave to compromise - it just seems such a big thing to compromise on! I love max and DH is keen too but can you tell me honestly please - does this sound too rude/porn star?.. Max Cummings

No, it's not as if it even works as a phrase and imo the added 's' makes all the difference.

Go with Max!

OnionBhaji · 10/04/2012 23:06

My lovely Max is 10 today and he says it is a fab name!!

Short, easy to spell and not too many around!!

shockers · 10/04/2012 23:20

I have an older Joe, and Barnaby was one of my possibles for DS2, but like you, when it came to it, it didn't feel right.

My other names were:

Toby
Felix
Jethro
Fergus
Johnny

We went for Johnny when he was about 3-4 weeks old and it has always really suited him.

shockers · 10/04/2012 23:22

Although I probably wouldn't recommend it with your surname... only just noticed that!

Anonymousse · 11/04/2012 15:33

Think I will start a new post (if I can manage it on this phone!) to canvas opinions on Max Cummings, thanks evryone so far
