My name is Polly. Can I call my baby Esther?!

I'm expecting a daughter in June and my favourite girl's name is Esther. My name is Polly so should I rule Esther out on grounds of a lifetime of 'polyester/Polly Esther' related ridicule? I really like it but maybe I should listen to my head not my heart. Other names I quite like are Chloe (but is it too common?) and Florence (too trendy)?

yes, yes you can.

GreenEyedMunster · 23/03/2012 15:55

No, do not call her Esther.

How about Edith?

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 23/03/2012 15:55

Just don't call her Dolly Grin

nickelhasababy · 23/03/2012 15:57
Grin

hadn't noticed it.
saw your thread title, and wracked my brains - all i could think of was dolly.

it'll be fine, it's not like Esther is your middle name, is it?

MadameMessy · 23/03/2012 15:57

I imagine you might get one little giggle at first, but after that I don't think anyone would care. also I'm so dim, that the connection didn't dawn on me until you spelled it out in your op so you'll probably be fine if you know loads of thicks like me :o :o :o

DoubleGlazing · 23/03/2012 15:58

I would have thought of polyester, yes.

OrmIrian · 23/03/2012 16:00

Hee hee! Oh that has cheered me up.

How about Athene?

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 23/03/2012 16:02

I know a Sam who's sister is Ella.

Sam and Ella! (salmonella)

Took me SO long to work out why their mother always called them Ella and Sam.

If you love a name go for it!

MrFluffy · 23/03/2012 16:04

Hahahahahahaha I had to read that a few times so it's not hugely obvious at first. Although I suppose in a "Ooh, we're having a party, shall we invite Polly and Esther?" situation it might be more so. But do you care?

nickelhasababy · 23/03/2012 16:04

could be worse.
i've never heard of a baby called Styrene or Vinyl Chloride or TetraFluoroethylene.

nickelhasababy · 23/03/2012 16:04
Grin i meant
juliewoojulie · 23/03/2012 16:26

made me laugh! i did think polyester when i read it, but making people smile with your choice of names isn't a bad thing surely??

DoubleGlazing · 23/03/2012 16:28

Chloe and Florence are both lovely :)

madaboutmadmen · 23/03/2012 17:17

Esther is my favourite too. Go for it if you like but people will have a giggle, they'll soon get over it

Positiveplus · 23/03/2012 17:19

No, I wouldnt go for Esther if my name was Polly - would just be too tempting for people to make the joke all the time and there are so many other lovely names out there, why even go there?!

It is a nice name though - I know of one Esther who is lovely! She has a sister called Martha which I also think is sweet.
Really love Chloe too - I'd got for that!

whippetwoman · 23/03/2012 17:30

Hello.

I love the name Esther. It's my DDs middle name. I like your name too actually! I wouldn't worry about it. I also like your other names as well. I think David Cameron called his daughter Florence though - which would put me off (but it depends on your political leanings). I have a cat called Florence but we call her Floss. She's a fine cat, so I will let you share her name :)

CheshireDing · 23/03/2012 19:14

Esther is a lovely name but I think that if you are questioning it with your name then you probably shouldn't use it.

UntamedShrew · 23/03/2012 19:15

I know someone with a Sam.. And an Ella Grin

Callisto · 23/03/2012 19:18

No. just don't do it. Or filla, tunnel, propylene, glot or any other poly- words. Think of the teasing when she goes to school.

littlepie · 23/03/2012 19:45

How many children are teased because of their parents name? None that I know of.

It might raise a smile initially with friend & family but I bet lots of people wouldn't think of it. How many times do you use a mother's name with a daughter's?

I would go for Esther without a doubt if it's your fave name.

VerityClinch · 23/03/2012 19:52

Polly, is that youuuuuuu???

If so, as you will know, despite having a perfectly normal actual name, DS is known as Boppy. Do whatever you like!

And I think Esther is lovely.

poppydaisy · 24/03/2012 12:44

I would definately call your dd Esther if you love the name.

If they were siblings (along the lines of Sam & Ella), I'd perhaps reconsider, but people will not often call your and dd's name together.

iwanttogetoffnow · 24/03/2012 12:57

I agree you should call her Esther. I too have never heard of a child being teased about the parents name.

You call her whatever you like
Chloe and Florence are cute too
I like Jessica but it seems to be everywhere now. Good job I had boys.

motherinferior · 24/03/2012 12:59

Darling, I'm really sorry but I think perhaps not.

motherinferior · 24/03/2012 13:00

I have a lovely friend whose first daughter is Polly and very nearly called her second Esther. But didn't. Just in time.

Mind you I am the dame who had to be talked out of calling her PFB Delilah.
