My name is Polly. Can I call my baby Esther?!

I'm expecting a daughter in June and my favourite girl's name is Esther. My name is Polly so should I rule Esther out on grounds of a lifetime of 'polyester/Polly Esther' related ridicule? I really like it but maybe I should listen to my head not my heart. Other names I quite like are Chloe (but is it too common?) and Florence (too trendy)?

I agree you should call her Esther BUT I know a polly who's grown up daughter is Suki - I pointed out the connection to a group of friends but none had seen it!

MrsJohnDeere · 24/03/2012 13:04

It's a lovely name but I wouldn't use it. Would be ok as a middle name.

BeNiceOrLeave · 24/03/2012 19:37

Yeah go for it. If you were thinking twins Polly and Esther then no, but your name? Not a problem!

Clary · 24/03/2012 20:45

Yes I think it's fine.

Made me smile when I worked it out, but no one links mum's name with daughter's. My name doesn't go with any of my DCs' names andit's so not an issue.

Tho I like Florence too, not that popular here in fact I don't know any, Was DS2's name if he had been DD.

Hah! I see we MNers are very split on this, unusually. MI usually agree with me about this kind of thing so I wonder which of us is wrong

Love Esther! think you can brush off any comments

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 25/03/2012 08:12

It depends on your capacity to withstand people's comments. Personally speaking, I wouldn't.

Perhaps you could call her Florence Esther, so that you can call her Esther amongst family and friends but your names won's appear side by side on official documents.

CheerfulYank · 25/03/2012 08:22

I think it's fine, but then again I do have a Sam and will have an Ella if I ever have a DD. I will insist in Ellie or Elinor, perhaps? :o

belgo · 25/03/2012 08:24

What about

Hester
Nesta
Stella
Estelle.

jandymaccomesback · 25/03/2012 08:28

She won't always be known as Polly's daughter, will she? For most of her life she will just be Esther, which is a lovely name.

PregnantCappuccinoDrinker · 25/03/2012 11:57

I can't lie, it is a little bit amusing, but not totally ridiculous. If it's your favourite name I'd go for it. I love the name Esther.

telsa · 25/03/2012 20:05

no, no and no. Sorry. What about Eleanor?

I'm not sure many of my friends even know my Mum's name. I can't imagine it would be used to tease her at school and as an adult it's a non issue IMO.

Amongst family it may give a few people a chuckle so make sure you sign Xmas cards Polly, DP and Esther.

It's a lovely name, I'd go for it. If it were 2 sisters I'd probably say no but mother and daughter I think is fine.

Petrean · 25/03/2012 20:16

And belgo how is Hesta and different!?!?!

Petrean · 25/03/2012 20:17

'Any different' even?!

Petrean · 25/03/2012 20:18

Hester FGS!

Start again.

Belgo how is Hester any different to Esther?!

nwthree · 26/03/2012 21:00

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. I think I've made my decision now, though there's still three months to change my mind...
