We are keeping baby's name a secret to everyone we know, and are currently leaning towards Monty. I am having doubts about it though - and would appreciate opinions on the name. Thank you!

I think of a particular line from Withnail and I which i won't repeat on here...! Grin

Other than that, i like it, but you will have a lot of people tell you it's a dog's name.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/02/2012 08:03

I came on here to say two things.

Dogs name
With nail and I.

See I have been beaten to both. Sorry, not keen.

RalphGnu · 02/02/2012 08:05

I love it, but it was my Grandad's name so I am slightly biased!

cutteduppear · 02/02/2012 08:15

My stepson is called Monty. It's a bit weird I think. Sounds militaristic, of reminds me of male strippers (The Full Monty).

MildredH · 02/02/2012 08:24

Really like it.

pinkhebe · 02/02/2012 08:28

Very ww2 bomber pilot Grin

It was our nn for ds2 when he ws a bump. (ds1 bump was Bomber)

DharmaCeutical · 02/02/2012 08:32

Don't mind Montgomery. I do know three canine Montys but people do love to tell me that DS's name is a dog's name and I couldn't give the tiniest shit.

LoveInAColdClimate · 02/02/2012 08:37

I love it.

littlepie · 02/02/2012 08:54

I like it. Reminds me of Monty Don (yum!)

ED1984 · 02/02/2012 09:08

Thanks everyone - keep the opinions coming - I am enjoying hearing the negatives and the positives and the reasonings for these opinions.

I like Montgomery nn. Monty (prefer longer names with nns.) - go for it! Unfortunately we did name our dog this so we can't use it, although I wouldn't let the possible dog name usage put you off..I gave DS the same name as my family dog when I was growing up...!

redrubyshoes · 02/02/2012 09:16

I had a cat called Monty.

WhereAreTheCakes · 02/02/2012 09:17

New baby at playgroup called Monty - not abbreviated.

Sparklywine · 02/02/2012 09:20

Ooh, we nearly had Monty, it was bump's name all the way through. Guess we sort of chickened out as;
We weren't sure we liked Montgomery for the birth certificate
Research here and elsewhere did indicate it was a bit 'doggy'
He didn't look like a Monty when he came out. Actually he looked like a Bill but we didn't go with that either Grin
In truth we just weren't brave enough either. We have gone with Gabriel as he is a Christmas baby, this has pushed the boundaries of acceptability but once named most people can't say anything against it (apart from dh's Gran who is quite rude outspoken)
If you love it, go with it, it's a great name - a Monty will chose his own path in life I think.

Heswall · 02/02/2012 09:23

I like it, I know a blonde haired floppy surfer dude child who is a great rugby player called Monty.

debka · 02/02/2012 09:25

It was our choice for a boy (nn for Montgomery). We had girls though!

SoFarWeAreEqual · 02/02/2012 09:29

I do like it but the 'Withnail and I' link is very strong indeed for me - thinking of the same quote as you, SlinkingOutsideInFrocks!

funnypeculiar · 02/02/2012 09:32

Love it (as a shortening for Montgomercy/Montmorency)- despite loving Withnail (which, cult as it is, will not be known by your son's peers I suspect) I know one & he is lovely Smile Dh wouldn't entertain the long versions though!

southeastastra · 02/02/2012 09:33

horrible unless you're very upper middle class then could probably get away with it

BikeRunSki · 02/02/2012 09:48

Sounds like a nick name.
Sounds like he stands to inherit half of Wiltshire.
Wears boden, joules and crew for scruffs.
Nice chap though

kreecherlivesupstairs · 02/02/2012 10:00

Apart from Withnail and dogs and Mr Don, it makes me think of the failed stage star in Sorry I've got no head.

madeindevon2 · 02/02/2012 10:10

I love it. It's my top choice if I was having another boy. But I'm not. What do u like for girls??? As we might like similar?!

Bellaholland · 02/02/2012 10:13

I really like it!

PercyFilth · 02/02/2012 10:40

Montague is another source name for Monty.
