God why are boy's names so hard? Something traditional and classic but not overused

Hi, I need some suggestions for boy's names. I have a DS1 George. If we were to have a DS2 I cannot think of any boy's names that are traditional and classic but not overused. I.e. not Thomas, William, James etc but then not something that says "I am trying too hard". I am pretty brave with my names (i.e. love Thaddeus, Balthazar, Ernest etc) but my husband is less so.

Any suggestions? So far I have:

Henry
Samuel
Christian
Felix
Magnus
Jasper?

I want something where he is not going to be one of 10 in a classroom but a name I am not going to feel ridiculous calling out in the supermarket.

Any and all suggestions welcome, no matter how obscure.

Thanks!

Christopher, Nicholas, Rupert, Sebastian, Edward, Timothy.

Rupert and Sebastian would be my faves. Grin

Sailorsgal - Love your suggestions. Nicholas is a great name but maybe too popular or has it died in popularity? Edward was my choice for DS1 but DH said no. Rupert is fab and I should have had that on my list but I bet DH says not. Timothy is lovely but maybe a little "safe" for me. I like Sebastian but our friend has a Sebastian...

I think Rupert is my favourite of your suggestions!

Adam
Peter
Ambrose
Stephen
Ross
Alec
Eben

Henry likely to be more than one in class.

I think all your suggestions are good OP, don't think any of the ones you have suggested are too popular. Here are some other possibilities too: Eliot, Theodore, Patrick, Ralph, Richard, Aubrey, Peter, Willaby.

tomverlaine · 31/01/2012 09:00

Albert, Seth, Caspar, Edmund, Alexander, Robert, Frederick, Theo

woolly76 · 31/01/2012 09:00

Henry is the best imo

sailorsgal · 31/01/2012 09:01

There are no Nicholas's around the area we live and I think its due a comeback.

I love Rupert too but dh wasn't keen.

I like Alexander too and its not popular here either.

emmyloo2 · 31/01/2012 09:09

Fabulous suggestions - love Frederick and Caspar, Willaby and Aubrey in particular.

I always see responses of "Oh god not another [insert overdone name]" and I always would love to know the suggestions of those posters because generally I agree with them that the particular name is so overdone. I am talking about names like Lily, Oscar, etc which are perfectly nice names but if I have to hear about a new baby Lily (inevitably with the MN Grace) I might shoot myself. So it's that type of name I am trying to avoid....(as well as more common but classic names such as William, James etc which I don't consider overused but just quite common).

Hope I am making sense...

Sailorsgirl - love Alexander but it is DS1 MN.

The good thing about Nicholas is we could use Nikola which is the Serbian version. My DH is Serbian origin and we didn't use a Serbian name for DS1 because most of them are hideous (very hard, think Slobadan, Radislav etc). However, Nikola is one of the half decent ones. I still prefer Nicholas though....

I love Magnus from your list.
How about
Gregory
Victor
Clarence
Hector
Michael
David
Jonathan
Benedict
Reuben
Leonard
Walter?

crispface · 31/01/2012 10:05

Stanley, Frederick, Sidney, Alan, Ian, Frank,

Not biased at all but love Nicholas. And there are 2 in DS's school of 1200, so not over-used.

Littlecherublegs · 31/01/2012 10:14

Dominic
Marcus
Linus
Silas
Nicholas
Nathaniel
Daniel
Anthony
Lewis

Personally like Dominic, Nathaniel and Anthony

Gavi · 31/01/2012 10:28

Marcus, Samuel and Alexander are gorgeous names that are cute on a baby and great on a grown man. Agree boys names are hard!!

LottieJenkins · 31/01/2012 10:29

Wilfred???

MrJellyBelly · 31/01/2012 10:37

I love the name Elliot. Classy, classic and different but not too poncy.

crockydoodle · 31/01/2012 10:38

Robert

marshmallowpies · 31/01/2012 11:18

Edmund
Patrick
Douglas
Erik

If you are looking for Serbian names...Ivan?

rachel234 · 31/01/2012 11:42

Quentin
Marcus
Thaddeus
are my favourite boys names at the moment!

hellokitty123 · 31/01/2012 13:02

From your list, OP, I'd say that Henry/Harry and Sam are very widely used already, so you might want to avoid these on that basis.

I like Magnus, Felix, Quentin, Benedict from those above or how about Lysander, Fabian or Winston?

deardear · 31/01/2012 13:15

Have friends with boys called Edward. One is in his twenties and known as Ed and the other is preschool and known as Ted which is different. I want something different for mine and we have so far narrowed it down to Harry which isn't different and also Isaac

hormonalmum · 31/01/2012 13:22

Dougie / Douglas

sailorsgal · 31/01/2012 14:55

Do you like Guy or Tristan, both very underused.

pilates · 31/01/2012 15:39

I like Henry and Edward but how about Joseph?

Snowbeetle · 31/01/2012 15:42

Duncan?
Hugh?

I like lots of these ideas - boys names are so much harder to choose than girls aren't they?

:)
