any ideas for similar sorts of names? Pondering this kind of group of unusual but not too frilly names, and finding it hard to think of others. I really like Harper but can't use it now...

I wouldn't call any of those strong names, tbh OP. That being said Astrid is a real contender for us if DC2 turns out to be a girl. But then I like girls names that don't sound feminine, that have hard sounds in them.
DD has a Gaelic name and I'm drawn to Germanic names this time around. Lots of hard ds and gs and names ending in ts or tes.

Scout is nice, like Bruce Willis's daughter, or the daughter in to kill a mockingbird

It's also my dogs name and she suits it perfectly!

chocoroo · 21/01/2012 10:49

I love Harper, DP vetoed it and I although I do like VB I'm probably glad he did.

I also liked Piper, Scout and Heidi. Heidi's a bit more frilly I guess.

We went with Romilly in the end but the shortlist also had Seren and Genevieve on it.

Hm, maybe strong is the wrong word. they all feel like they fit into a certain group to me though. Thanks for thoughts Smile

Also Harriet.

Greta is lovely.

Hattie.

LydiaWickham · 21/01/2012 18:10

Oh, I do like Genevieve, but it's a bit girly, and I think you're after non-girly girls names...

I'd suggest:
Ingrid
Imogen
Astrid
Margot
Quinn
Rowan
Meredith
Taryn
Tamsin
Vivienne

chocoroo · 21/01/2012 18:55

Quinn. Yes. I like Quinn too.

Attongly dislike Rowan though. I know boys and girls with the name and for some reason it drives me bonkers.

Alexis, Astrid, Addison, Ashlynn, Brooke, Bethan, Bridget, Claire, Coral, Carmen, Camryn, Cerys, Deborah, Diane, Erin, Eden, Esther, Edith, Fern, Frances, Faith, Genesis, Giselle, Hope, Hadley, Harper, Hayden, Hero, Hesther, Hannah, Hazel, Iris, Jordan, Jayden, Janet, Kaitlyn, Katrin, Karen, Kiran, Lauren, Lois, Lillian, Megan, Morgan, Madison, Merryn, Miriam, Nadine, Opal, Peyton, Payson, Paris, Piper, Quinn, Reagan, Robyn, Rachel, Ruth, Shannon, Seren, Sorrell, Taylor, Tegan, Tess, Violet, Willow, Xanthe, Yasmin, Zainab.

I think it's something to do with them mostly not ending in a,ee,i, o or y that makes them sound less 'girly'
