I was really dubious about naming ds the name we chose, I was more anxious about what others would think. But DH loves the name, and it was his turn to pick the DSs name and to be honest I do love the name too.

So we went ahead with it, BUT 13 months later, Im still not used to it. It doesnt seem to roll off the tongue like DS1s name does. I think its due to the fact that its not a popular well known name e.g. not it the top 100 names. Also other peoples reactions to his name dont really help e.g. He's called what?!

Anyone else found themselves in a similar sitaution

His name is Roman by the way

I like RomanSmile

But I do know what you are going through my DP choose DD's name,I like it,but I've never loved it.
She's 3 now,and it is 'her' but If I had my time again I'd re-name her.

I'm sorry,I guess that wasn't much help,I just wanted you to know you aren't the only one!

FriggFRIGG · 19/01/2012 22:52

Her name is Sky BTW,
so it is an unusual name too.

workshy · 19/01/2012 22:53

took me 3 years to get used to Ella! lol

pixiestix · 19/01/2012 23:20

Ooh, I really like it!
Are you wishing that you had chosen something else?

southeastastra · 19/01/2012 23:22

it is a bit pretentious

can you call him manny instead?

(sorry no help)

dimplebum · 19/01/2012 23:31

No, I definately dont want to change his name - like I said, I do like the name. It really suits him, he s a big strapping chap - he s my little Roman soldier.

But, I didnt think it would take me this long to get used to it, I also get fed up of other peoples comments about his name or struggling with it e.g. Is he called Rowan?

Thanks for all your comments BTW

My daughter is Anoushka and I get a lot of "what?" "Babooshka?"

It doesn't bother me - I think it's a great name and I'm happy with our choice. Was dh's idea.

fluffygal · 19/01/2012 23:43

I know how you feel,I am just starting to get confident about my 16 month old DD's name.OH and I love it,but I worry about other peoples reactions too much.I used to get embarrassed when people asked me her name but now I am starting to say it more confidently as she just wouldn't suit any other name! My DD is called Zanna. By the way I think Roman is a lovely name and don't think its an odd one at all. Like you say its a strong, cool name. Possibly belongs on that hip londoners baby names thread.

cece · 19/01/2012 23:47

Not odd at all, I know a couple. Think it is gaining in popularity tbh.

I had the same thing with DD. Her name was so unusual when we named her I got asked by several people if we had made it up Hmm

10 years later it is now in the Top 100 girls names for 2011. Smile Now no one blinks an eye at it.

SubordinateClaws · 20/01/2012 04:07

Polanski!

OriginalJamie · 20/01/2012 04:18

I also have 2 boys and I wonder if part the problem is, that you feel you've "used up" your favourite name for the first, so the second will always be a bit "second best". Boys' names are more difficult, as well, IMO.

I actually wish I'd used DS2s second name instead. My problem is the reverse of your - the name is too popular. But it does really suit him and Roman suits your little fella.

I really like Roman, BTW.

TinkerMaloo · 20/01/2012 10:04

Bonsoir · 20/01/2012 10:06

Roman is a lovely name!

belgo · 20/01/2012 10:07

Roman is a great name. I know a couple here in Belgium.

Fo0ffyShmo0ffer · 20/01/2012 10:15

It's a lovely name.

I have a Rohan and although I loved it from the start I have had my fair share of "What?. Ron?. Roland?. Owen??.
I have taught DS to very firmly and clearly correct the mistakes and then let it go.
My DS loves his name and is very proud of it. I have a feeling yours will too. Grin

Likesshinythings · 20/01/2012 10:20

Lovely, lovely name. It feels quite grown up for me though, so maybe he just needs some time to expand into it? Maybe come up with a nn for the time being?
My DS is Gabriel, and is rarely called that, I think for the same reason that it's a bit big for him as yet. He insists on being called Gaby (to rhyme with baby).

3boysgirlontheway · 20/01/2012 15:08

I haven't even had my daughter yet and I know I am going to feel like this about her name. It isn't that unusual on here, but, I haven't ever met one where we live and I know people will think we are being totally pretentious. However it is her name already, and it is pretty and I am just going to suck it up and get used to it being her and let everyone else think what they like.

3boysgirlontheway · 20/01/2012 15:08

Oh and for what it is worth my neighbour had a little boy before Christmas and he is called Roman, I love it!

LaFilleSurLePont · 20/01/2012 17:46

Roman is gorgeous. It works well at any age imho. If you love then I'd stick with it.

MrsJoeDuffy · 22/01/2012 00:23

love it.

Chaotica · 22/01/2012 00:25

Great name.

glamourmama · 22/01/2012 00:45

I like it, similar to my ds name, he is Romay (pronounced Ro-May. We liked Rome and Roman and Remy and Romelle but jus decided on Romay in hospital. When I sounded out to people whilst pregnant I got a few negative responses so I stopped telling people and said it was goin to be a surprise! I was apprehensive about tellin some family (I know my mum does not like it and always pronounces it wrong!) But its your childs name so be proud I think unusual names are better than common. He will thank you for it one day I'm sure.

dimplebum · 22/01/2012 00:47

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments, I will def stick with his name Grin

Roman is a gorgeous name, strong, not hard to pronounce and not one your DS will grow out of like some names.
