Colin?

Pregnant with DS2.

My DFather passed away tragically just after we found out I was pg. V sudden. He did know about the pregnancy and was delighted though.

I'd really like to name DS2 after my dad. But my dad's name was Colin.

What do you think? He didn't have a middle name and we already double barrel (or I'd use his surname as a middle).

I can't think of any other names, whenever I try I keep coming back to Colin. But... it's what all the idiots on TV are called and nobody uses it now do they? I don't want DS2 to be mocked.

I'm not sure I'd worry about your older son feeling left out somehow. My dd was named for two of her great grandmothers. dh wanted to use his grans name and I thought it would be nice to balance that our with my favourite granny's name too. ds (who came first ) is named after a historical figure coupled with a name essentially we thought sounded good with it. He's never complained that he doesn't have a family name.

I think that 'Colin Peter double-barrel' works just fine (obviously depending on the double-barrel) if the surname isn't too long and complicated then another at the front would probably be OK too, but it might need to be quite a short

The best option would certainly be for the Colin to be a middle name.

• avoids possible hating of old fashioned name by child
• avoids DH issues
• avoids possible distress of DM and family by use of name all the time.

Your DH is being very odd and a bit dog in the manger though. He actively didn't want Peter as a mn when you suggested it. So it just looks as if he doesn't want his father commemorated for himself, but doesn't want YOU to have that either. That's hard to respect, tbh. He's either behaving very childishly, or he must hate the name Colin SO much that he's willing to look like a brat to try and put you off it!

For that reason, I would absolutely not have Peter as a first name, and quite probably not as a mn. Your DH doesn't want his son to carry that name, he just wants to score points - that's all wrong.

I'd go for Something Colin X-X, after pointing out to your DH that choosing Peter in these circumstances is, if anything, a bit of a slight to his father. And start talking more happily about a first name with no links to anyone.

Like Duncan, Colin will make a comeback as people look for more 'solid' names imo. Sorry to hear about your dad, op.

one of my rabbits is called colin :)

I talked to my mum, and she said she'd rather DS2 didn't have Colin as a first name. She'd still like us to use Matthew (my dad's favourite boy's name).

Also showed DH this thread - we are going to work together to try and find a first name we both like, probably not Matthew, with Colin as a middle. He's going to think some more about having Peter in there as well :)

Colin is a good solid manly name in Scotland, popular in the west highlands, not a "nigel" name at all. Its not an old name up here but then i would say that as my younger brother is called Colin (childhood family nickname "Collywobbles"!).

Just letting mn know that my mum had a dramatic change of heart when he arrived, and Colin Marcus arrived a week ago

He is beautiful and was born with loads of dark hair - just like my dad.

I like the name Colin, it's my DH's name and i wanted to name DS it, but he didn't let me :(

Aww thankyou! I wanted to update since this thread was really helpful for me (not even that long ago! So amazing!)

Marcus just pinged into my head when I saw him, never really considered it, but Colin Marcus Double-Barrel sounds good and he/we can go by his MN if Colin is too much in the future.

He does just look like a Colin though. It's weird but although I am still devastated about my dad, it's eased a lot now. Most of it is newborn snuggles of course but it's more than that.

My hubby is a Colin he is generally the most perfect person i know! ;-))
So I really like the name.

Its a geek-cool name i think!! Some people call him Col.

I do think whatever you name your baby your Dad would have been happy.
When is your baby due? do you have a bit longer to decide!

Peter Colin is better than Colin Peter. Something Colin Peter would be better still though. What is DS1's name?

Congratulations! Great name - uncommon among babies, easy to spell and pronounce, and has meaning for you and your family.

it really isnt a bad name at all. there wont be a million others in his class too :)
