what would Oliver's brother or sister be called?

DC2 is due next year, and DH and I are really struggling with names. We need a fairly classic name that can be pronounced easily by non-native English speakers, and already have a DS (whose name we chose before he was even conceived).

DS is known more as Oli than Oliver, so names like Polly, Molly, Holly etc are out Xmas Grin

I like Toby (Tobias) and Emilie, DH is a bit meh about both. Love Matylda too, but DH HATES it. He likes Emma and Amy, which are both names I love but which have connotations (girl called Emma who bullied me at school, old school acquaintance who is utter muppet just called her baby Amy. I do know a very lovely Emma and Amy now, but old associations will not die down!), he also likes Eduard, which I'm a bit meh about.

Any suggestions?! Everyone knows at least one Oliver, so those you know, what are their siblings called?! thanks Xmas Smile

Choose a name you love. Any name will go with Oliver (being very common) apart from perhaps Olivia Smile.

choceyes · 06/12/2011 10:54

I know an Oliver who's baby brother is Thomas.

hulabula · 06/12/2011 10:57

I know loads of Olivers - with all sorts of sibling names ranging from Joshua, Quentin, Sophie to Elizabeth. Choose a name your dh and you like!

EdithWeston · 06/12/2011 10:58

I know several Oliver and Sam duos, also Max, Joseph, Thomas, Lucas, Frederick

For girls, Jessica, Saskia, Sophie, Hannah

Any good?

EssieW · 06/12/2011 11:03

Oliver and Alice here. It was only after that I realised they both start vowel plus 'L'.

We also liked Toby, Alexander, Jonathan, harry for boys
For girls, Ellen, Eleanor, Lucy

TimeWasting · 06/12/2011 11:14

James or Emily.

AvadventKalendar · 06/12/2011 11:18

I was think Toby while the thread was loading :)

I think Oliver's sister should be called Chloe, Emily or Sophie.

Kveta · 06/12/2011 11:20

thank you!! DS was going to be Alice Essie, but I've kind of gone off it now as it was 'his' name had he been born without a winkle Xmas Grin

can't use Alexander (or William, or Frederik, or James, or John) as we have them in the family/very close friends. Will present DH with the name Thomas and see what he says (as it's Tomas, pronounced 'Tom-ash' in his language). Also Sophie is good, think it's Sofie or Zofie in his country, both of which are lovely. Ooh, and Lucy, but we do know a lot of Lucy/Lucies. hmm. it's so difficult this time!!

more ideas more than welcome!!

Gracie is the sister of the Oliver I know

Montsti · 06/12/2011 11:23

I have an Oliver and expecting DC2. We have found out we're having a girl (some of my favourites below) but already had boys names too as follows:

William, Benjamin, Sebastian, Frederick, Henry, George (also think Thomas, Edward, Alexander, Samuel, Nicholas work well).

Emilia/Emily, Annabel/Arabella/Isabella/Annabella (though think there is a shop called Isabella Oliver....), Charlotte, Beatrice (seems to be very "in" at the moment on mumsnet..)

As others have said Oliver is a classic, popular name so not too difficult to find another name that works with it. Personally I would (and am) sticking to a name of a similar vein and not going too faddy/modern/unusual if that makes sense...

Good luck!

HSMM · 06/12/2011 11:26

I know an Oliver (Ollie) with a sister Kimberley (Kim) .

ThinkingAboutBoden · 06/12/2011 11:28

Right - two Olivers known to me have sisters called Laura and Amelia (Millie)

Also, my sister's friend has an Oliver (quite old now though - he's 10) and his sister (as well - all sisters I note with interest....) is called Emily

HTH - good luck!

P.S. Is Beatrice very "in" on Mumsnet recently......I have a Beatrice.....interesting!

Arwhen · 06/12/2011 11:33

I'd say any other top 10 name would go with Oliver.

Montsti · 06/12/2011 11:37

Sorry wasn't criticizing Beatrice (I love it!) but it seems to pop up a lot on these threads - not sure if it is being used a lot or just one of those names that lots of people like. I hadn't seen it mentioned too much 2+ years ago so thought it was more "in" now. Lovely name and clearly I don't have a problem with popularity!

EssieW · 06/12/2011 11:41

We also had Peter on our list 2nd time round. Bit more unusual these days but would really suit a small boy.

Kveta · 06/12/2011 11:42

ooh, Peter, hadn't thought of that! would be Petr though. hmm. I like it.

OP posts:
Kveta · 06/12/2011 11:44

but have just remembered DH has an uncle Petr, drat. Don't want to use a family name if possible for the 1st name. Middle names will be Christopher or Eliska (pronounced 'El-eesh-ka'; was MIL's name) so sorted on that front, thankfully!!

MollieO · 06/12/2011 11:46

If we had had more than one then Oliver's sister would have been called Georgia.
