DC2 is due next year, and DH and I are really struggling with names. We need a fairly classic name that can be pronounced easily by non-native English speakers, and already have a DS (whose name we chose before he was even conceived).

DS is known more as Oli than Oliver, so names like Polly, Molly, Holly etc are out Xmas Grin

I like Toby (Tobias) and Emilie, DH is a bit meh about both. Love Matylda too, but DH HATES it. He likes Emma and Amy, which are both names I love but which have connotations (girl called Emma who bullied me at school, old school acquaintance who is utter muppet just called her baby Amy. I do know a very lovely Emma and Amy now, but old associations will not die down!), he also likes Eduard, which I'm a bit meh about.

Any suggestions?! Everyone knows at least one Oliver, so those you know, what are their siblings called?! thanks Xmas Smile

Theres a Oliver in dd2's class, he has a little sister called 'Amy'.

we don't know any other Olivers yet, but give it time, I'm sure when he goes to school he'll be one of many!!

Theo was on our long list too actually, although, again, in Dh's language it's Teo(dor). As his family speak no english, we plan to have the first name translatable between our languages! I like Ben too, from Benedikt, but surname starts with K, so not sure how Benedikt K sounds.

thanks for the ideas :)

Siblings of Olivers I know are: William, Florence, Adam, Louis, Isaac

Montsti - Oliver isn't a timeless classic, I would say it's rather faddy. There were no Olivers in my school in the 80s and now there are 5 in each class!

It goes with anything; from Darcy to Emily and Joshua to Dexter.

FunnysInTheGarden · 06/12/2011 16:16

I know an Oliver with brothers Emile and Miles and sister Madeline, and another Oliver with a sister Chloe. The second pair have an English mother and French/German father and live in France

With Oliver having been THE most popular boys' name for a number of years, we're all bound to know several little Olivers - agree that ANY name goes with it (other than Olivia or Olive perhaps). Just choose a name you love!

edulwichma - I suppose it depends on where you live/went to school etc.. but I know Olivers who are in their 80's, 40's, 30's and all the way down to babies. Clearly it has peaked in the past few years (no. 1 name in 2009 and 2010) so more chance of there being several Olivers in a class than, for example Xavier or Quentin etc..however as far as I can see you are just as likely currently to have multiple Jacks/Thomases/Williams (which I wouldn't class as faddy either) etc...I know a few Olivers but DS is the only one in his school of 40 and there is only one in my nephew's year of 50 too...think it's a bit ignorant to say "now there are 5 in each class..."

Yes a popular name but hardly faddy as has been in the top 25 for over 15 years...(not sure of the records before that but it has never been an unusual name in my lifetime) maybe my definition of "faddy" is different to yours..
