Caspar or Barnaby

Which do you prefer? We're american--is Barnaby a bit too british? What kind of person do you imagine a caspar/barnaby to be?

Barnaby is great. Would be on my list but my childhood best pal (a blue roan cocker spaniel) was Barney.

When I hear Barnaby I think 'bear', when I hear Caspar, I think 'ghost'. But once you know a child with any name, it quickly loses other connotations.

Can you be too british, I don't think so.

I much prefer Barnaby to Caspar - it's on our own long list. If you like Caspar what do you think of Jasper?

Yes, we live in the states, in the rural south in fact. Our other son is Alistair, a name which most people around here have never heard of. I can't tell you how often I've been asked how we "came up with it." My main concern about Barnaby is that it may be too erm, aspirational. Caspar doesn't seem to have that sort of baggage--most people I imagine just think of the ghost. (which doesn't bother me at all)

I love Caspar (yes I think of the ghost..). Don't like Barney and Barnaby is ok. Isn't Barney (the big purple thing) huge in the US?

Barney the big purple dinosaur was big like ten-fifteen years ago or so. I just googled it and the show has been on hiatus for a little over two years. Yo Gabba Gabba seems to be the big thing now. (so I guess I'll have to skip on the names Brobee and Muno) ;)
If we go with Barnaby, I'd probably (occasionally) call him Barnsy or something like that as a nickname--never Barney. I sometimes call Alistair, "Ali." My husband never nicknames though. Caspar might get nicknamed to Cass, which of course over here, rhymes with ass. But then again, Alistair (who just turned two) might pronounce Barnaby as "Barbie" and he could get stuck with that as a nickname. (I have an uncle Stuart who has been called Tooey all his life because that was how my father pronounced it.)

Neither can be said properly without having a pronounced lisp, so do be sure to cultivate one.

Caspar, Sorry but I don't like Barnaby at all and to me it sounds more American than British. Next doors horrid dog is Barnaby.
