Imogen or Saskia?

Our baby girl is due in a few months and DH and I are going round and round in circles between the names Saskia and Imogen. I have a little boy called Leo and think they both sound okay with his name.

The middle name will be Ruby Rose after both mine and DH's grandmothers.

So, which do you prefer? Many thanks for any opinions.

Saskia Ruby Rose, definitely.

Imogen Ruby Rose is just too saccharin.

midnightexpress · 31/10/2011 11:53

I prefer Saskia. but I like Imogen too.

ShowOfHands · 31/10/2011 11:58

Saskia is much better with your middle names.

Sasha is definitely a boys name though I do love it and acknowledge that some people have started using it for girls in this country. I can't get my head round it at all. It'd be like calling a girl John.

frutilla · 31/10/2011 12:03

I prefer Saskia. Imogen is a bit stuffy sounding...

Montsti · 31/10/2011 12:51

I'm surprised everyone thinks Sasha is a boys name in the UK as I have known a number over the years (am in my mid-30's) who have all been girls (some born in the past 10 years). I know some non-British male Sashas and in Eastern Europe and in other mainland European countries Sasha (and several spelling variations) is predominately a male name. However in the US it is almost always used as a girl's name - see Sasha Obama etc...I would put it on a par with Andrea/Nicola as far as in some countries they are boys names and in others girls names.

ShowOfHands · 31/10/2011 12:54

I've only ever met male Sachas. And the only famous people I can think of called Sacha are male too. But then I'm not v clued up with slebs and am including such gems as Sacha Distel in my list. Grin

I think I must be going mad or have very strangely named female friends - ha ha!

SaffronCake · 31/10/2011 13:46

Without the middle names I prefer Imogen, but Saskia is better with them. I would probably still pick Imogen though because...

  1. Its not terrible with the middle names, it's fine.
  2. You don't use the middle names every day, only sometimes.
  3. It's gorgeous.
QueenVictoria42 · 31/10/2011 13:55

Saskia. Don't get me wrong, I like Imogen, think it is pretty, but Saskia just has that little extra something for me. Can't really describe why it feels like that though!

fluffywhitekittens · 31/10/2011 13:55

Imogen.

ShesAStar · 31/10/2011 17:24

Thanks for all the suggestions and replies. I haven't counted but it looks about 50/50, however after reading the saccharin comment I am being swayed towards Saskia. Also I sort of get what someone said about Imogen sounding a bit fidgety - odd but I do understand what you mean.

Saskia, love it and love nn Sassy!

Sasha Fierce - Beyonce's stage persona anyone? Grin

greenzebra · 01/11/2011 09:35

I like both names but I prefer Saskia its got more character.

alwayspoor · 01/11/2011 09:41

Like Imogen, love Saskia - both lovley with your choosen middle names.

HereKittyKitty · 01/11/2011 20:01

Love Sasha even though it breaks my rules about unisex names. Saskia is gorgeous but DH thought it was quite harsh sounding. Imogen is nice but not quite as nice as the others...

3isamagicnumber · 02/11/2011 14:46

Imogen!

proudfoot · 02/11/2011 23:38

Both beautiful! I would lean towards Imogen (slightly) but lovely choice either way.

tammytoby · 03/11/2011 09:21

Imogen sounds very harsh and unfeminine. Also won't work in most other languages.

Saskia, on the other hand, is feminine and elegant and will sound lovely in German, French, Spanish and most other (European) languages I can think of.

Sasha is a boys' name to my ears. In Germany, Russia and many other European countries it is a nickname for Alexander. I personally don't like it for a girl.

Bonsoir · 03/11/2011 09:23

Imogen isn't a nice name at all. Saskia is a lot prettier.

justhayley · 03/11/2011 10:14

I love both, Imogen Lilly and Imogen Rose are both on my list - ruby is also on my list but I think saskia goes better with a double barrel middle name.

pilates · 03/11/2011 11:56

I prefer Imogen, dislike Saskia.

sonniebonnie · 03/11/2011 12:01

I personally find Imogen very harsh and don't like it, sorry. Saskia is much nicer and sounds pretty, more feminine and agree with tammy that it would work better in other languages too.

FurryFox · 03/11/2011 12:37

I have an Imogen, usually known as Immy, so will have to go with Imogen. Don't dislike Saskia however.

salvadory · 05/11/2011 15:01

We had this very same decision 2 years ago and plumped for Imogen, now expecting number 2 dd and would still go for saskia if dh had his way but the bb association would put me off. Saskia definitely less popular on the ONS list for last year.
