I like a good strong British / Scottish name. Not too trendy and Grandad-ish, but maybe a bit 70's Dad-ish?

I also like a good shortening or nickname.

Whaddaya reckon to these, and can you think of any alternatives?

Leonard (Lenny)
Douglas (Dougie / Doug)
Bernard (Bernie)
Donald (Donnie / Don)
Magnus (Mags)
Raymond (Ray)

Duncan.

shortwave · 28/10/2011 12:57

I like a lot of those, Annakin. But all the ones I like are already in use by close family or friends and there's a couple of ex-boyfriends in there too Blush

Duncan is brilliant but is my sister's dog :(

I have a Blair, can't be shortened to anything though. We also considered Archibald nn Archie, Fraser, Struan, Ruairidh, Fergus, Angus, Gregor, Alistair.

Shame about Duncan- I love that name.

Snapespeare · 28/10/2011 13:36

we have a Murdo, shortended to Mo and a Hamish, nickname Mishka/Moushka

mollschambers · 28/10/2011 13:46

Leonard, Bernard and Raymond are about as un-Scottish as you can get IMO! I like your other three.

What about Angus usual nn Gus or Angie (with a hard G) round these parts?

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 28/10/2011 13:48

We had both Angus and Fergus on our list for DC2 before fining out she's a girl - both would have been shortened to Gus, and I know an Alistair shortened to Ali

PerryCombover · 28/10/2011 13:51

love scottish sounding boys names
v cool

Hassled · 28/10/2011 13:52

I saw the title and thought Duncan - shame about the dog. I do like Rory. Alistair?

Of your suggestions - the names are all nicer than the nicknames. Really don't like Lenny or Bernie. Could Leonard be a Leo?

mollschambers · 28/10/2011 13:52

Andrew?

GiantUnderCrackers · 28/10/2011 13:56

Hamish?

brawhen · 28/10/2011 14:04

Hamish, Murdo, Murray, Alexander?

brawhen · 28/10/2011 14:04

Lewis, Harris or Ross. Try an island...

shortwave · 28/10/2011 14:08

ooh yes, Hamish and Murdo are good.

I know, Bernard, Leonard and Raymond are actually all a bit English Dads Down The Golf Club but I kind of like that angle Grin

btw - I know two women up here who have names shortened to "lenny" - don't know if it's really that common but you have been warned!

tummytickler · 28/10/2011 15:04

I love every single one of your names! I adore Raymond - it is ds' middle name, but I would have used it as a first name, but my Dad is called Raymond and he hates his name.
Bernard is fab as is Douglas and Donald. How about Dougal?
Leonard is my least favourite

BananaramaLlama · 28/10/2011 15:11

There are some crackers there, scarlett.

I love Barry very much, especially as a nn for Finbar, but DH isn't keen on the Viz association. Because the 11 year olds of 2023 are going to be bang into their Viz, right? Hmm

Claragoesbumpsinthenight · 28/10/2011 18:23

I have an Alexander nn Sandy Smile I love Sandy as cute for a boy but you can imagine a rugged tartan shirted man making porrige with that name.
Ps I'm allowed to say that blatant stereotype as I am indeed scottish.

scarlettlips · 28/10/2011 18:52

LOL @ Clara brilliant.

shortwave I went thought all of my friends dads! I don't understand the Viz association...long day need Wine Grin
