I like a good strong British / Scottish name. Not too trendy and Grandad-ish, but maybe a bit 70's Dad-ish?

I also like a good shortening or nickname.

Whaddaya reckon to these, and can you think of any alternatives?

Leonard (Lenny)
Douglas (Dougie / Doug)
Bernard (Bernie)
Donald (Donnie / Don)
Magnus (Mags)
Raymond (Ray)

Finally a thread that agrees that Donald is a fab name - I have one!

ShroudOfHamsters · 29/10/2011 07:39

Dunstan instead of Duncan, nn Stan?

Or Hector, Struan, or Murdo.

SpawnChorus · 29/10/2011 08:19

Struan is gorgeous! How about torin?

shortwave · 29/10/2011 09:09

Thank you all very much for your input; I have an update...

DH is keen on Magnus and Murdo. I'm still quite in love with Douglas.

Kenneth will be the middle name as it's from the family.

I am larfing that you got your list from thinking of friend's Dads, scarlett Grin - Brilliant. 60-something Dad is precisely the vibe I'm going for. I'm stepping away from the Stanley / Albert Grandfather trend and I just don't like any 'modern' names.

I'm going for a last-ditch campaign for Finbar / Barry, although I don't see it ending well.

Hunter?
Leonard I love, love, love!

mollschambers · 29/10/2011 10:06

Of Magnus, Murdo and Douglas I think Magnus would be my choice. Really cool name. I like them all though.

DigOfTheStump · 29/10/2011 10:24

Finbar is nice, more Irish than Scottish though.

Struan, Torin and Fergus are cool -and Donald!

SpawnChorus · 29/10/2011 10:26

Has Sinclair been mentioned?

BrawToken · 29/10/2011 10:26

Laurence?

I like Dougie (pronounced doogie), short for Douglas too.

mollschambers · 29/10/2011 10:32

Ah see, therein lies the problem with shortening Douglas. Some places it becomes Duggie, others say it Doogie. Think Doogie is more Central Belt. I, being Heiland, prefer Duggie.

shortwave · 29/10/2011 10:37

I love Laurence with the nn Larry but it's too close to a v close family name.

Sinclair would suit my geeky DH Grin

Struan doesn't sound right when I say it out loud for some reason Confused

RE heritage, I'm half English half Scottish and DH is half Irish and half Scottish. Lots of potential there.

It'd definitely be 'Duggie' rather than 'Doogie' as we now live in Englandshire and that's what'd sound better down here I reckon.

shortwave I was wondering if Roderick nn Roddy fitted the bill? 70's Dad-ish chic or just blaaaa!!! [hsmile]

thousandDenier · 29/10/2011 22:00

just suggested Roderick to DH as I love Roddy

He muttered something about "Woderwick the wapist and Woger the wobber"

Something to do with Life of Brian, apparently Confused

Hold on.. maybe Brian?

thousandDenier · 29/10/2011 22:02

NOT Brian.

CaptainNancy · 29/10/2011 22:54

Oh but Roderick is lovely! Little Roddy, toddling along beside you...

and Roddy Frame of course Wink

lollystix · 29/10/2011 23:36

Love Magnus and Douglas - both vetoed by dh.

We have a fergus which would be good for you if scots and Irish there as it's used in both countries. He's known as Ferg or Fergie to us. My FIL says a Fergie is a brand of tractor though.Confused

ceeceeanne · 30/10/2011 09:00

Forbes nn forby/sy

snapcruncher · 13/11/2011 16:12

all my cousins were on one of those lists except for Graham I think!
