Finally, we're down to our final 5 names. It's taken alot longer than I thought it would due to DP and I having completely different tastes but we're finally here Now all we have to do is pick one... Oh, and middle names.

Valentina.
Sasha.
Avery.
Kate.
Jessica.

Valentina is a family name on my side - DP doesn't like it. Sasha is my name, I've loved it since I was about 15 and always thought it would be my first daughter's name - DP is keen but it would use it if he had to. Avery is a family name on his side - we both like it but only like, not love. Kate and Jessica are DP's choices - I'm not a huge fan of either of them.

I really don't want to still be arguing over this when DD comes along. HELP! Which do you like or dislike? I can take it, I promise!

Valentina is sweet. Kate short for Catherine is lovely.

Sasha and Jessica - meh. I always think of sasha as a Russian boy's name.

Avery is awful, and also a very popular BOYS name in the USA/Canada. Plus just reminds me of aviary.

hulabula · 07/10/2011 14:07

Love Valentina and Avery.
Sasha is a boys' name to my ears (plus I wouldn't name my child the same name as its parent)
Jessica and Catherine are very widely used already and a little dull imo.

usingapseudonym · 07/10/2011 14:15

Our friend Valentina goes by "Valia" as a shorter name which I like.

Can you use Katie/Kate short for Catherine if Catherine is with a C (just wondering as we're thinking about it!)

Ephiny · 07/10/2011 15:34

Valentina is a beautiful name IMO. Sasha and Avery both sound a bit masculine to me, though there's nothing necessarily wrong with that.

Kate and Jessica are both nice names, but seem just a bit 'ordinary' compared to your other choices!

ShroudOfHamsters · 07/10/2011 16:13

Sasha Kate

or

Valentina Kate, Valentina Avery

So you both get a favourite. Yours come first because a. they are the nicer names and b. you are pushing the baby out Wink

I also think of boys when I hear Sasha, but I didn't want to say there were two boys names on the list :o

Rhubarbgarden · 07/10/2011 20:41

Sasha or Valentina. I hate Avery. And Jessica actually.

mathanxiety · 07/10/2011 20:43

Valentina -- lovely
Sasha -- nice
Avery -- lovely
Kate -- a bit meh/generic
Jessica very downmarket/70s/frilly and also a sort of Barbie name imo. 'Sickly sweet' - yy to this. jessickly sweet--

My favourites are Valentina and Avery, with Sasha in third partly because I see it as a boys' name (sorry).

lollystix · 08/10/2011 23:04

My tip - if you want Sasha just shut up on the whole debate for now. When she pops out just say something along the lines of 'look our wee Sasha'. After he's seen you go through childbirth he'll be an emotional wreck and think you're bloody amazing so he'll agree to pretty much anything.

cece · 08/10/2011 23:08

Out of those names I would only use Sasha or Kate.

Valentina - nice if you have some Italian links otherwise no

Avery - really don't like it at all

Jessica - perfectly nice name but I have an irrational dislike of it, especially when shortened to Jess. There are so many nice names, why settle for Jessica is my opinion.

cece · 08/10/2011 23:10

lollystix - I tried that tactic with DC3. He popped out and I said ah look Gregory! DH looked at me and said no way not even after that!

Hence DC3 is not called Gregory!

lollystix · 08/10/2011 23:14

Yeah but that was third time round-you know how first baby you're wrapped in cotton wool and they give a shit your pregs. I'm 38 weeks with baby 4 and he's barely even noticed-he doesn't cut mr any slack nowGrin

babycham42 · 08/10/2011 23:14

Sasha Valentina is def. the best IMO.

cece · 08/10/2011 23:16

Too true - after DC1 he looked awful and worshipped the ground on walked on for ages Smile

I should have gone for Gregory with that one - not sure DD would have been impressed though Grin

lollystix · 08/10/2011 23:18

I'm buggered now then if it didn't work with dc3 for you. I've been hoping to employ this tactic to get my Lachlan - it's been vetoed 3 times before though so I'm probably onto a losing battle.

cece · 08/10/2011 23:19

Does he come with you to the register office? Grin

susiedaisy · 08/10/2011 23:19

Is Avery pronounced as in a bird avery if so I am not keen, Jessica is nice so is Sasha

RickGhastley · 09/10/2011 08:06

I only like Sasha and Kate I'm afraid.

Avery is awful - sounds like a bird cage and very American.

CheerfulYank · 09/10/2011 08:12

Well yes but Americans are lovely .

:o

RickGhastley · 09/10/2011 08:24

Yes Americans are lovely (sorry if my post implied they weren't!) but OP will constantly be explaining why she chose Avery, where it comes from etc.

Take it from someone whose patents gave her a "forrin" name!

MummysLittleSunbeams · 09/10/2011 08:32

Oh I though you meant that you were called Sasha so wanted to use it as a name for a dd! That would have been a little odd I think.

That is my favorite from your list. I wouldn't choose any of the others for a middle name though.

rachel234 · 09/10/2011 11:49

I think Valentina is gorgeous - classic, feminine with lots of nickname options. And not widely used already - definately the best from our list imo.

Sasha is a boys' name (well, I only know boys) and Kate is a little dull and widely used already. Jessica is ok but just not to my taste, as is Avery.

LittleMissFlustered · 10/10/2011 09:34

Avery is gorgeous. Vale Tina is pretty too.

All but one of the Sacha/Sasha's I know are boys, and I know about six.

LittleMissFlustered · 10/10/2011 09:35

Valentina even. The autocorrect isn't feeling predisposed to let me get away with not checking before I post today >_
