Too different?

Just to give a bit of background dh likes 'grown-up' 'professional' names. He's quite old fashioned in his views (especially concerning names) so naming our dc's hasn't exactly been easy!

Dd's name is millie, but her birth certificate says Amelia, so when she becomes a lawyer or accountant like her dad she has a 'name to give clients' as dh puts it

So with dc 2 on the way I have fallen in love with Coby obviously dh is dead set against this unless we have a 'proper name' to go with it. I was thinking Jacob, but are they 2 different unrelated names? Or would you say Coby could be Jacob's nickname?

Spero-The question was if Coby could be used as a nickname for Jacob. Not "Am I condemning my son to a lifetime of ridicule if I use it as a given name?"

I am aware of the question. But op did not answer sm quite reasonable point - when will the 'nickname' be jettisoned? When he is in his mid fifties?

I do get quite riled by this trend for giving children names you wouldn't give a rabbit. Jamie Oliver should be reported to social services for eg.

When he is old enough to decide for himself what he wants to be called. For all we know he could decide as a teenager he wanted to be called Gerald Cedric Montgomery the Seventeenth!

It would be his choice to known as Coby or Jacob, therefore the point you are trying to make doesn't come into it.

Op I am sure there are people out there who will find 'Coby' a name throbbing with masculine presence.

But I am generally wary of names which end in 'y' as I don't think they age well. But that's just me.

However I do think the naming process should go beyond whether just you like the name. You don't have to carry it. Think of poor Zowie Bowie for eg.

But it's not his choice to be known as Coby as a small child is it? He gets lumbered with that. Names do matter.

Which child chooses the name they are "lumbered" with Spero? If he was lumbered with the name "Joshua" (which personally I hate) is that better or worse?

No child gets to chose. That's precisely the point. That's why parents should think beyond the cute toddler years and remember they are creating a human being, not a little life style accessory.

I am not a massive fan of name Joshua either, but it's much better than Coby. In my opinion. Which has actually been canvassed by the op.

Or did I miss the bit about only posting if you think it's a fab name??

Spero you could argue your point with any name you give a child weather its george, cory, Edward, Jacob, Oscar, etc. They may hate or be teased for whatever you give them.

I think by giving my child an 'adult' name is looking beyond the toddler years. I will stop using millie or coby when they tell me too. If my dc as teenagers tell me they want to be called chocolate teapot the third then thats what i will call them regardless of what I want or what it says on the bc

OP - I like the name Jacob partly because it has so many poss n/names - including Coby, Jay and Jake (cool in all the world bar Scotland, it seems).

Blimey - this thread really took a turn into strange territory!! Have people been on the wine?! I'm not sure how giving your DC a nickname became such a controversal topic when it is regularly discussed on this board

Anyhoo... OP, how about Corbin for the bc? Or do you think DH will think that not traditional enough? BTW I think Jacob works well, just my personal preference would be Corbin over Jacob

If you want Coby to be a nn for Jacob, then do it. I like the name, but then I am the one whose neice called her baby Joyce Margo.

It's quite similar to Cody, which is a reasonable name, although more common in America than the UK. Coby is the name of an American actor (Coby Bell) - doesn't seem to have affected him too adversely! And it's a reasonable nn for Jacob - I prefer it to Jake.

I wouldn't worry what anything means in Scotland unless you plan to live there - it's local relevance only.

Oh dear, two of my children have y ending names, tommy and Cory .

I worked in a nursing home and knew lots of Milly's in their 80's and 90's, real name Millicent but they wouldn't thank you for calling them that !
