Just to give a bit of background dh likes 'grown-up' 'professional' names. He's quite old fashioned in his views (especially concerning names) so naming our dc's hasn't exactly been easy!

Dd's name is millie, but her birth certificate says Amelia, so when she becomes a lawyer or accountant like her dad she has a 'name to give clients' as dh puts it Hmm Grin

So with dc 2 on the way I have fallen in love with Coby obviously dh is dead set against this unless we have a 'proper name' to go with it. I was thinking Jacob, but are they 2 different unrelated names? Or would you say Coby could be Jacob's nickname?

I like Coby OP!

Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) is Jacoba I believe.

Tbf if we are naming children based on the toddler stage, mine would have utter bastard and arsehole on their birth certs.

I personally like Coby, but my brother still goes by his cutesy name rather that the name on his birth cert and is well known and respected in his professional field.

I on the other hand have a grown up name that people will always associate with a small rather naughty girl.

Op I think you've covered all the bases and it's s nice compromise, Jacob isn't a uncommon name and it's nice to have a different nick name.

Loving your new name Thumb. Are you saving it fir the full moons Grin

People post all the time to say I like this nickname, what can it be short for. I don't understand why this particular nickname to full name thread's turned ugly. Clearly the OP intends to give her child a full name, she just wants one that shortens to Coby. We did this whole thing the other day for someone who wanted a name to shorten to Joe (but not Joseph) did we not? There's no need to be nasty surely?

I am not the biggest fan of Coby, but it works well as a n/n of Jacob.

And, most kids get their short names and their Sunday names used intermittently throughout their lives, so there will be no magical switchover age which some people seem to be upset about.
